Izaak Walton 1593-1683 Izaak Walton was a staffordshireman having been born in Stafford in 1593, son of an alehouse keeper. Though he lived in London for much of his life, he was well aquainted with Charles Cotton, from Beresford, which lies on the Staffordshire, Derbyshire border, and the two men spent a great deal of time fishing and strolling along the banks of the River Dove. He is best remembered for writing the 'Compleat Angler' or the Contemplative Man's Recreation', which became and remains the greatest classic of angling literature and is a unique celebration of the English countryside. It became one of the most reprinted books in the history of English Literature with over 300 new reprints.
Izaak Walton The Compleat Angler tells the story of 3 sportsmen, Auceps, the fowler, Venator the hunter and Piscator the fisherman, who compare their favourate pastimes whilst travelling through the English Countryside along the River Lea. The discourse is enlivened by songs, poems, country folklore, recipes anecdotes, moral meditation, quotes from the bible and classic literature, and lore about fishing and waterways. Charles Cotton wrote a second part to the 5th edition which is mainly concerned wth fly fishing. The 2 men built a fishing temple which still stands on private ground on the bank on the River Dove in Beresford Dale.

Walton, Izaak (1593-1683) Englischer Schriftsteller. The Life and Death of Dr. Donne" "The Life of George Herbert" , 1670).
Who was Izaak Walton?
Without question, the most famous book ever written about angling is The Compleat Angler published by Izaak Walton in 1653. Since that time, it has been through over 300 editions and is probably the most widely read (or at least the most widely owned) book after the Bible and the Koran . Because The Compleat Angler is an all-around handbook for fishing in England, people not familiar with Walton have the idea that the book is only for fly fishing snobs. It isn't. Izaak Walton was primarily a bait fisherman who came late to the fly. He was a self-made businessman who retired in his 50's and wrote the book that would earn him immortality at age 60. His prose is so strong and true that most people today can read his book with much less difficulty than they can read Shakespeare, for example. "As no man is born an artist, so no man is born an an angler." (from The

Text by Izaak Walton
Set by Henry Lawes Man's life is but vain, for 'tis subject to pain And sorrow, and short as a bubble; Tis a hodg podg of business, and money and care, And care and money, and trouble. But we'll take no care when the weather proves fair, Nor will we vex now though it rain; We'll banish all Sorrow, and sing till tomorrow, And angle and angle again. W Mike Walbert The Bible teaches that both God is in control and that people make realchoices. These two truths go side by side throughout the Scriptures. TheBible absolutely does not teach fatalism. But neither does it teach that people are absolutely free and autonomous. The effects of the Fall and our very natures restrain us. This is called an antinomy. That is (per the American Heritage Dictionary) "A contradiction between principles or conclusions that seem equally necessary and reasonable." A SAMPLING
The technique of fore-edge painting was developed in the middle of the 17th century, but was little practiced until the end of the 18th century, coming into an efflorescence in the 19th century. The method was to fan the fore-edge of the text block (the outer edge) and clamp it. Then, a water color painting would be executed on the fanned leaves. When dry, the fore-edge would most commonly be gilt, less commonly marbled. With this concealment, the existence of the painting would be unknown unless the fore-edge was fanned, a pleasant surprise. Special Collections has acquired a significant collection of both single fore-edge paintings and double fore-edge paintings. The collection was dedicated to the memory of the late Miss Nancy Karnes Bird, former Head of Special Collections from 1960 to 1974. Some fine examples of this British art of decorating the gilded fore-edge of a book with a hidden painting in the collection are a seven-volume set of The Poetical Works of William Wordsworth (1846) with a different Lake District view on each volume; Vaughan's
