The Compleat Angler, Or the Contemplative Man's Recreation by Izaak Walton London: Richard Marriot, 1653. Izaak Walton (1593-1683) wrote one of the bestselling books of all time. The Compleat Angler, or the Contemplative Man's Recreation is the third most frequently reprinted book in the English language after the Bible and the works of Shakespeare. Published in 1653, Walton's first edition was small and was published by his close friend and fellow parishioner, Richard Marriot of St. Dustan's. Subsequent editions of 1655 and 1661 were enlarged and elaborated. In 1676, Charles Cotton, a friend and pupil of Walton's wrote a collaborative addition - Second Part In all, there were five editions in Walton's lifetime. The NSL holds 36 editions in the rare book room and seven published in the 20th century in the main reading room Walton was born in Stafford, England. As a young man he apprenticed to a cloth merchant. In the 1610s he was the proprietor of an ironmonger's shop (a hardware store), but he became prosperous as a linen draper and retired 20 years later. He had acquired property in the countryside and lived much of his life near Winchester.

The Friends of Winchester Cathedral forges links among those who love Winchester Cathedral. Founded in 1931, the Friends have given over £2M to the Cathedral. Grants have covered not only repairs to stonework, stained glass windows, the organ and the roof, but also improvements to lighting, the public address system and access for the disabled. Recent gifts have included new vestments for the Clergy, a new bell and a radio-telephone security system. The Friends also provide a choristers scholarship. These are some of the ways in which this beautiful place of worship has been supported. Becoming a Friend Become a Friend today and help to preserve this beautiful Cathedral. There is no fixed annual subscription, but there is a minimum sum, shown on the application form which you can access from the next link, below which it is not economical to provide literature and membership benefits. Using a banker's order saves time and expense on administration. Signing a Gift Aid Declaration enables the Friends to reclaim tax from the Inland Revenue, provided you are a tax payer in the UK. Further details of methods of payment are available from the Friends' Office, open 9.30am to 1pm, Monday to Friday and some afternoons. "When we stop taking life for granted, we begin to see life as a gift. All that we have, all that we are, the very fact that we’re alive is a blessing." -Peter McWilliams "Every misery I miss is a new blessing." - Izaak Walton Izaak knew what he was talking about. He lived ninety years. This doesn’t seem too unusual, except that he lived from 1593-1683, when the average life span was about 45 years. You see, most of our blessings, we take for granted, because they seem so trivial or so omnipresent. Thorton Wilder said it well in his classic play, Our Town: "Oh, earth, you’re too wonderful for anybody to realize you!" Again, my advice is to count your blessings (and write them down!) This advice will be well worth the investment that it requires. You will find that is provides you with a fresh perspective, lightens your step, widens your smile and improves your self image. Certainly these rewards are worth the small investment! Start with a clean piece of paper - a big one. Pull out some markers (crayons work great for this job too!) and start brainstorming. Write down whatever flows into your mind. After you get down everything that comes to your mind now, put the paper away. Go back and add items to it a couple more times over the next day or two.
