Chapter 1
Mobile and Mobile-Satellite Services
Introduction
The mobile service is a "radiocommunication service between mobile and land stations, or between mobile stations."[EN13] This includes the conventional land, maritime, and aeronautical mobile services, common carriers such as cellular telephone and radio paging, and new applications like PCS and elements of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS, formerly the Intelligent Vehicle Highway System, or IVHS). Mobile radiocommunication applications have been in use since the early part of this century, starting with ship–shore radiocommunications, although recent years have seen tremendous growth. This expansion has been stimulated both by technological advances and by increased demand for mobile services. Advancements in semiconductor technology allow for low–cost, lightweight, portable units and are, in part, responsible for the increase for land mobile services. Mobile services are used by Federal, state and local government entities for many purposes, including such critical functions as law enforcement, public safety, natural resource conservation, transportation, and national defense. The private sector uses mobile services to satisfy the myriad of conventional communications requirements, including specialized needs such as electronic news gathering,[EN14] aeronautical public correspondence, and biomedical telemetry. In the 1980's, mobile-satellite service technology advanced from initial concepts to practical system design and service demonstrations. Today, the competition to build global satellite networks is intense. Companies around the world have proposed to use satellites to deliver mobile services, which are expected to generate large revenues. For communication service providers and users, satellite-based systems offer ubiquitous coverage of large geographical areas, the remotest of which may be uneconomical for coverage by terrestrial-based systems.

Conservation under way as university signs contract
KU has signed a performance contract with CMS-Viron Energy Services that will help the university save in energy costs.
The agreement, signed Dec. 20, outlines 173 conservation measures to be taken on the Lawrence campus. These improvements are expected to result in annual savings of $1.7 million.
The university began negotiating the agreement with Viron for the development of the energy savings performance contract in 2001.
The savings generated by the plan will be used to pay for the cost of the $18.4 million project, which includes upgraded lighting, adding to building automated control systems, installation of new equipment for the chiller building and power plant, installing water conservation measures and continuing to upgrade the electrical distribution system for the campus.
The 18-month construction period began in December.

The Milky Way - our galaxy
Picture: The Lund Observatory mosaic of the Milky Way
Introduction
If you look up into the sky on a clear dark night, far from the intrusive glow of streetlights, you will see a faint band of light running across the heavens. This is the Milky Way , our own galaxy. It contains about two hundred billion stars and countless other objects besides. The Milky way viewed through binoculars is a magnificent sight, with thousands of stars in each field of view. The image on the right was taken at the Anglo Australian Observatory and shows the centre of the Milky Way, in the constellation of Sagittarius. Like the constellations and planets, the Milky Way was important in mythology, and many stories were told to explain it. Our galaxy is only one of billions of other galaxies in the universe, but it is special to us, because it is home to Earth and our solar system. The Milky Way has been studied extensively by astronomers, and today our ideas about it's nature are set on a more firm foundation. Here we set out to examine what this faint band of light is, where it came from, and where Earth and the Sun fit into the picture.

Ball bounces Astros' way as bad luck turns to good
By JOHN P. LOPEZ
Jimy Williams called it "buzzard's luck," and for months the scavengers circling overhead seemed to be picking and stealing away everything but the last "m" in the skipper's first name. But today it is so obvious that there's still some meat left on the bone; that the Astros can play beautiful baseball and put together a head-spinning victory streak. The Astros have gone from dodging the buzzards to chasing the Cardinals. And if ever there was a game that showed just how much confidence on the field and consistency on the lineup card can mean between gloom and glory, this was it. This was a 6-3 win that came thanks to all the things that went wrong six weeks ago even three weeks ago going right.

Caitlin's Way
"With all of the peer-pressure, schoolwork, hyperactive hormones and scary decisions floating around, growing up can be tough enough! But it's even tougher if you're Caitlin Seeger. Imagine adding a new home, a new family and a new environment to an already-bumpy adolescence. Caitlin's a rebellious orphan from Philly who did just that: She headed west to live with distant cousins in Montana to avoid Juvenile Hall. Thanks to her relatives, the Lowes, their son Griffen, and a little help from a wild horse named Bandit, Caitlin just might make it!" Caitlin's Way is the absolute bestest TV show out there! Lindsay Felton is a great actress, and I hope that one day she makes it big! If you haven't seen Caitlin's Way yet, you really really should! Watch it on Sunday evenings, 8:00 EST time on Nickelodeon, or on Wednesday evenings, 6:00 EST time on Nickelodeon. Here's a bunch of info to let you know what's going on so far... 12. Way Of The Warrior - 3DO REVIEW - Coming Soon Magazine!
Offers a brief review.
http://www.csoon.com/issue5/way_3do.html
WAY OF THE WARRIOR by UNIVERSAL STUDIOS
FORMAT: 3DO
DATE: 1994
PRICE: N/A Fighting games have always been popular for the console market. The best example is the huge success of Acclaim in both arcades and consoles with the Mortal Kombat series. Even the PC is getting its own versions with the first two titles of the series already converted to floppy and CD-ROM. If I introduced this review with the Mortal Kombat example, it is because Way of The Warrior on the 3DO uses the same graphical concept.
Click on image to visit site Each character has been filmed and digitized for all movements. On the opposite, the backgrounds have traditional graphics like other fighting games (Super Street Fighter II, Samurai Showdown, etc...). The quality of animation is good, but if we compare it to Mortal Kombat, it is not as smooth as Mortal Kombat's animations. Sometimes, movements are jerky and it seems like there are not enough frames to render perfect movement. One other thing that lacked in Way of The Warrior is the number of special moves. Most of the time, only two are available for each character and they are not that impressive. The fatalities are too often similar same (for example, the character burns up completely until only ashes are left) or they are deja vu.
CONCLUSION
Apart from this, Way of The Warrior can be considered as a good game as it is the first game from Naughty Dog on the 3DO. If the company wants to release another fighting game, they have better come up with something better than Mortal Kombat II or at least as good as Mortal Kombat III which has just been released on consoles.

http://www.astro.wesleyan.edu/~kvj/mw.html
The Milky Way as a Cannibal The above images are taken from two animations made from the same simulation of a satellite being torn apart by the Milky Way's tidal field. The simulations followed the satellite's evolution for several billion years. In the both images, the Milky Way is represented in blue in the center, with the satellite orbiting around it. The satellite itself appears much larger than it really is in these animations because the images were colored to emphasize the structure of the debris. The one on the left has been color coded to show the density of stars being stripped from the satellite. Click here to see this movie (1.7 Mbyte MPEG animation.) or here to see a selection of frames (0.02 Mbyte). The one on the right has been color coded with the time when particles are lost from the satellite (ie the particles that are lost the first time the satellite goes around the Galaxy are shown in red, and each subsequent time in green, blue, yellow....) Click here to see the movie (1.7 Mbyte MPEG animation.) or here to see a selection of frames (0.02 Mbyte) from the movie.

Sloan leads the way as SAP accounting system pilot site
By Robert Murray
Management Reporting
and
Janet Snover
Community Involvement The Sloan School of Management made the leap to SAP on July 8 when they began as a pilot site for MIT's new financial systems functionality for departments, laboratories and centers. "Now that I actually see an SAP account manager's report, I'm very pleased," said Ellen Baum, Sloan's director of financial services. Ms. Baum is one of the first School administrators at MIT to experience what it is like to do real work in the SAP environment. "What's really neat is that I can drill down from the account manager's report to an individual account statement, then to a detail transaction report, and finally to the transaction itself. I won't be rummaging around in files for pieces of paper anymore. All our preparation work now seems worth it," she said. The preparation work Ms. Baum referred to is the months of effort that preceded the launch last week of SAP at Sloan. What started in January as an exploration of SAP's high-level reporting and analysis tools evolved over time into the first pilot of the full functionality of MIT's new financial system.
