    John Webster
    Introductory Note
Of John Webster's life almost nothing is known. The dates 1580-1625 given for his birth and death are conjectural inferences, about which the best that can be said is that no known facts contradict them. The first notice of Webster so far discovered shows that he was collaborating in the production of plays for the theatrical manager, Henslowe, in 1602, and of such collaboration he seems to have done a considerable amount. Four plays exist which he wrote alone, "The White Devil," "The Duchess of Malfi," "The Devil's Law-Case," and "Appius and Virginia." "The Duchess of Malfi" was published in 1623, but the date of writing may have been as early as 1611. It is based on a story in Painter's "Palace of Pleasure," translated from the Italian novelist, Bandello; and it is entirely possible that it has a foundation in fact. In any case, it portrays with a terrible vividness one side of the court life of the Italian Renaissance; and its picture of the fierce quest of pleasure, the recklessness of crime, and the worldliness of the great princes of the Church finds only too ready corroboration in the annals of the time. Webster's tragedies come toward the close of the great series of tragedies of blood and revenge, in which "The Spanish Tragedy" and "Hamlet" are landmarks, but before decadence can fairly be said to have set in. He, indeed, loads his scene with horrors almost past the point which modern taste can bear; but the intensity of his dramatic situations, and his superb power of flashing in a single line a light into the recesses of the human heart at the crises of supreme emotion, redeems him from mere sensationalism, and places his best things in the first rank of dramatic writing. Review by Dudley Stone
John Webster (1580-1625), a contemporary of William Shakespeare, is famous for just two plays: The White Devil and the Duchess of Malfi. The latter is a relatively straightforward study of revenge within one family. Motivated by greed and family pride, the Cardinal and the Duke of Calabria do not want their widowed sister, the Duchess, to marry again. They persuade her to hire one Daniel Bosola, a murderer who acts as a spy for her two brothers. He reports to them that she is in love with Antonio, a member of her household, and has a child by him. The brothers vow to avenge the family honor, and they subsequently kill the Duchess, her maid, and two of her three children. Guilt-ridden, the Duke goes insane, and Borsola, the Cardinal, and Antonio are all killed. This bloody tale of evil, perversion, and corruption in a disintegrating society is pretty strong gruel and, lacking much of the poetry of Shakespeare, as well as his comedy, requires very powerful ensemble acting and a production in the grand manner. Unfortunately, the West Side Rep's best efforts failed in both respects. All credit once again to the Rep. for another interesting choice of play; would that more Off-Offs would present the classics. But this time, the choice to produce this play, which needs so much sweep and space, in the very small 30-seat black-box, with a cast of 13 playing 19 roles, was a mistake. The result was a production that fell below the Rep's. standards. Although there are some good performances, many of the small roles and doubling resulted in acting little better than high-school level. It's hard to believe that the director could not have selected a stronger cast from the thousands of non-Equity actors in the City.

Why should he not as well sleep or eat by a deputy? This might take idle, offensive, and base office from him, whereas the other deprives him of honour. CASTRUCCIO. Believe my experience, that realm is never long in quiet where the ruler is a soldier. FERDINAND. Thou toldest me thy wife could not endure fighting. CASTRUCCIO. True, my lord. FERDINAND. The region has often been shrouded in romance and myth, but its realities are just as fascinating as its legends. This interdiscriplinary course approaches the South as a region, examining its landscape, the peculiarities of its history, its folklore and myths, arts and archtecture, music and literature. The region has a curious blend of cultural traits created by blacks and whites who have lived together for 300 years.’

The early history of English drama is important because

The origins of drama as we know it are more the concern of anthropologists because drama and religious ritual seem to have been bound up with one another in the earlier stages of all civilizations. These things lie in the background of all drama:

As far as we can trace the history of English drama, it begins with the elaboration of the ecclesiastical liturgy in mutually answering dialogues. No substantial continuity can be established between the origins of European drama in the Middle Ages and the drama of Greece and Rome, which had already run its course by the time the Christian era began.

The history of Renaissance literature is essentially the history of the development of a literature in English or the vernacular, a revolutionary change arising simultaneously withand in truth, made possible bytwo related things:
    • The Protestant Reformation , which in England vested authority not only in a national church but in the sovereign as its head and which led eventually to an English Bible and to services in English; and The arrival in England of Humanism , an intellectual movement which developed in 14th Century Italy and emphasized the dignity of man and his perfectibility, placed reason above revelation, and stressed education as the avenue for self-development.
Together, the Reformation and humanism combined to make possible a national literature, whichto quote Roger Ascham, writing in
