The Thomas Merton Archives at St. Bonaventure University Books Left at St. Bonaventure When Merton Entered Religious Life Books Left at St. Bonaventure When Merton Entered Religious Life Compiled by Paul J. Spaeth These are books which Merton left at St. Bonaventure College, presumably with the director of the library at that time Fr. Irenaeus Herscher, just prior to his leaving the college and secular life to travel to Kentucky to enter the Trappist monastery at Gethsemani in December of 1941. There is little, or no marking in these books. In the few cases when there is something of a more substantial nature, it is noted with the entries. Many of the books would seem to have been purchased new, but even in these cases it is not always certain that the markings are from Merton. The most important markings are Merton’s ownership signatures along with the dates when he received them. The list is broken down into only a few categories which seemed to be the most appropriate. What I relished in the movie Shakespeare in Love were the in-jokes and literary allusions. Like the boy with the rats who complains to Will Shakespeare about the shortage of gore and death in his plays. That boy, John Webster (1580?-1625?), grew up to write his own bloodthirsty play, The Duchess of Malfi , a tragedy of revenge that ends in virtually universal carnage.
The movie touches on Will’s rivalry with fellow playwright Christopher Marlowe too, and the self-importance of actor Ned Alleyn. Likewise the dual careers of actor/theatre owner Richard Burbage.
Although short and heavily built, on stage Burbage (1567?-1619) cut an impressive figure and was highly regarded as tragedian. He was the first actor to play characters such as Hamlet, Henry V, Lear, Macbeth, Othello, Richard III and Romeo.
Theatrical rivalry? What about a notorious anecdote about Burbage and Shakespeare as sexual competitors? (It began in 1602 as a diary entry by lawyer John Manningham.)

FORM AND FORMLESS: SEVENTEENTH CENTURY DRAWINGS OF ROCKS IN EUROPE AND CHINA AND THE PATHS TOWARDS MODERN GEOSCIENCE AND SPIRITUAL ENLIGHTENMENT ROSENBERG, Gary D. , Indiana Univ/Purdue Univ - Indianapolis, 723 W Michigan St, Indianapolis, IN 46202-5132, grosenbe@iupui.edu By the 17th Century, the century of Steno, the artistic depiction of rocks as natural objects had clearly begun to diverge from purely aesthetic illustration in Europe. Geometric perspective feelitated the illustration of form and appearance of rocks and projected a line of art towards the development of modern geosciences. No such separation took place in China, where illustration was a path towards spiritual enlightenment, even as it emulated the processes of nature along the way. The purpose here is to present a few of the milestones of illustration along both the Western and Eastern paths, On the Western path are Bosse (1602-1676) and Desargues'(1591-1661) three-dimensional illustrations of quarry stones drawn in 1648 that firmly connect geometric perspective to the scientific description of rocks. Other examples include Serlio's (1475-1554) mid 16th Century drawings of theater sets that show that an awareness of the lateral continuity of strata was not confined to the early Renaissance genius of Leonardo.

The Bard on the Net
Here you will find - as we hope - useful links to Shakespeare-related sites on the Internet. If you are a student and looking for enlightenment regarding a paper, you should also take a look at the section where we hid some student-specific links.
What are good Shakespeare related sites on the Internet?
Since the Web is in constant flux, it is always a good idea to consult one of the major search engines first. Yahoo lists an array of Shakespeare sites under several category headings. The two best Shakespeare sites for obtaining e-texts of Shakespeare's plays and poems are the Complete Works at MIT (maintained by Jeremy Hylton) and The Works of the Bard (maintained by Matty Farrow).
Both of these sites offer the Moby editions of the plays, poems and sonnets, as well as a search engine that enables one to search particular plays or the complete works for keywords or phrases. Many Shakespearean texts exist in multiple versions. Links to a number of Shakespearean e-texts (including the 1603 and 1604 Hamlet Quarto, and a 1619 Lear Quarto), may be found at
