H.G. Wells traverses with The Time Machine
"No. I cannot expect you to believe it. Take it as a lieor a prophecy. Say I dreamed it in the workshop. Consider I have been speculating upon destinies of our race until I have hatched this fiction. Treat my assertion of the truth as a mere stroke of art to enhance its interest. And taking it as a story, what do you think?"
The Story
The Time Machine is about the traveler who tells the story of his journey to the future in his time machine. This not only predicts the future containing the presence of time machines but also a time where the high class society lives in fear of the night dwelling ruffians that live underground. He demonstrates the perfect utopian society that lives happily and thoughtlessly in the day but in the night, when the light is no longer there to protect them, fears the Morlocks that live as cannibals. He eventually travels forward in time to witness the Earth at its death.
Herbert George Wells (1866-1946)
Herbert George Wells was born in 1866 in Bromly, a small town near London. He attended college and graduated with a degree in biology. His lower-middle-class background and his knowledge of science influenced his writings. He thought that science would make a better world. He also thought that that humans would destroy their own race by having a big atomic war and eventually kill each other off. Some of the books Wells wrote were The Time Machine, The Invisible Man The War of the Worlds and The Island of Doctor Moreau. He was very famous in his lifetime, and his books sold well. His book War of the Worlds was a radio drama, performed on Halloween night in 1938. Many people tuned in after they said "This is only a story", so they thought that Martian aliens were attacking Earth. So people grabbed their rifles and jumped in their cars and took off. H.G. Wells died in his sleep on August 13, 1946.

    H. G. Wells
Biographical notes by Blake Wilfong "The past is but the beginning of a beginning, and all that is and has been is but the twilight of the dawn." British author Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) was perhaps the true "father of science fiction". Everyone knows of his early SF novels The Time Machine The Island of Doctor Moreau The Invisible Man (1897), and The War of the Worlds (1898). But unlike Jules Verne before him, Wells also crafted many superb short science fiction storiesforeshadowing the form the genre would take in pulp magazines decades later. And the vitality and unrestrained imagination of Wells' writings makes them more readable today than Verne's. Wells was born in Bromley, Kent, to lower-middle-class parents. Despite grave financial difficulties and a poor early education, Wells earned a Bachelor of Science degree, with honors, in zoology and geology from the University of London in 1890. This scientific background would prove invaluable to his writing, though he was already producing science fiction as he worked toward his degree. In 1888, he published The Chronic Argonauts (an early draft of The Time Machine ) in the Science Schools Journal Wells also went on to write many historical volumes, literary novels and scientific texts, all of which he considered more important than his science fiction. Ironically, they are virtually forgotten today.

    Herbert George Wells (1866-1946)
Besonders deutlich tritt dies in "Mind at the End of its Tether" (1945, "Der Geist am Ende seiner Möglichkeiten") hervor. Wells starb am 13. August 1946 in London.

    H. G. Wellls Wells, H(erbert) G(eorge) (1866-1946), English author, broadcaster, political philosopher and public figure, wrote and spoke on a wide range of subjects but is, perhaps, most famous for his science-fantasy novels with their prophetic depictions of the triumphs of technology as well as the horrors of 20th-century warfare. Wells was born September 21, 1866, in Bromley, (an outer London borough), and educated at the Normal School of Science in London, to which he won a scholarship. He worked as a draper's apprentice, bookkeeper, tutor, and journalist until 1895, when he became a full-time writer. Wells's 10-year relationship with Rebecca West produced a son, Anthony West, in 1914. Throughout his long life Wells was deeply concerned with and wrote voluminously about the survival of contemporary society. For a time he was a member of the Fabian Society . He envisioned a utopia in which the vast and frightening material forces available to modern men and women would be rationally controlled for progress and for the equal good of all. Some critics have said his later works were increasingly pessimistic and that the author was in despair at the end of his life. '42 to '44 (1944) castigated most world leaders of the period; Mind at the End of Its Tether (1945) expressed the author's doubts about the ability of humankind to survive. Not all commentators concur with this view (see the excellent 'H.G.: The History of Mr Wells', by Michael Foot). Wells also wrote An Experiment in Autobiography (1934). He died August 13, 1946, in London.

    H(erbert) G(eorge) Wells (1866-1946)

English novelist, journalist, sociologist, and historian, whose science fiction stories have been filmed many times. Wells's best known works are THE TIME MACHINE (1895), one of the first modern science fiction stories, THE INVISIBLE MAN (1897), and THE WAR OF THE WORLDS (1898). Wells wrote over a hundred of books, about fifty of them novels. "No one would have believed, in the last years of the nineteenth century, that human affairs were being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their affairs they were scrutinized and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinize the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water." (from War of the Worlds)
Along with George Orwell's Nineteen-Eighty-Four and Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, which was a pessimistic answer to scientific optimism, Wells's novels are among the classics of science-fiction. Later Wells's romantic and enthusiastic conception of technology turned more doubtful. His bitter side is seen early in the novel BOON (1915), which was a parody of Henry James.

Concurrently with these realizations there is a growing discontent with the part played by the universities, schools and libraries in the intellectual life of mankind. Universities multiply, schools of every grade and type increase, but they do not enlarge their scope to anything like the urgent demands of this troubled and dangerous age. They do not perform the task nor exercise the authority that might reasonably be attributed to the thought and knowledge organization of the world. It is not, as it should be, a case of larger and more powerful universities co-operating more and more intimately, but of many more universities of the old type, mostly ill-endowed and uncertainly endowed, keeping at the old educational level.
Both the assembling and the distribution of knowledge in the world at present are extremely ineffective, and thinkers of the forward-looking type whose ideas we are now considering, are beginning to realize that the most hopeful line for the development of our racial intelligence lies rather in the direction of creating a new world organ for the collection, indexing, summarizing and release of knowledge, than in any further tinkering with the highly conservative and resistant university system, local, national and traditional in texture, which already exists. These innovators, who may be dreamers today, but who hope to become very active organizers tomorrow, project a unified, if not a centralized, world organ to "pull the mind of the world together", which will be not so much a rival to the universities, as a supplementary and co-ordinating addition to their educational activities - on a planetary scale.

    The Invisible Man
    Author Info: H.G. Wells
Roughly a century ago, H.G. Wells and Jules Verne virtually created the Science Fiction novel. In a period of less than 4 years, Wells wrote three seminal classics of the genre: The Time Machine The Invisible Man (1897) and The War of the Worlds (1898). The Invisible Man, which owes an obvious debt to Frankenstein, is based on one of the eternal themes of mankind and one of the perennial themes of Science Fiction. First, it explores the nature of man by asking whether an invisible man would still be bound by normal morality. Second, it develops the theme of science as a two edged sword; after initially conveying great power, scientific innovation turns on its wielder, driving him mad. One hundred years later, this ambivalence about technology and scientific progress has remained a central part of our culture. As in all of the best books of the genre he helped to create, Wells combines these speculations with an exciting, fanciful tale. He and Verne truly set their successors a lofty standard to aspire towards.
