H.G. Wells
H.G Wells (1866-1946) is best known as the author of 'scientific romances' such as The Time Machine The War of the Worlds and The Invisible Man , but in a lifetime of eighty years he proved himself to be an accomplished and prolific author, journalist, sociologist, popular historian and social prophet. Born into a shop-keeping family, with a mother who worked as a housekeeper, Wells escaped from his first career as a draper's assistant to study Biology at the Normal School of Science in London. Working as a teacher of science his financial circumstances led him towards writing, achieving critical and financial success with The Time Machine in 1895, and followed up by the other popular scientific romances in the 1890s. In the early years of the twentieth century Wells turned towards more realistic forms of novel -writing, in works such as Kipps The History of Mr Polly Tono Bungay (1909) and Ann Veronica (1909). After the First World War Wells's power as a novelist deteriorated, but his reputation was restored with popular works of history such as The Outline of History (1920) and A Short History of the World (1922), acquiring the status of popular educator and self-made intellectual. His final work

The manuscripts include Mr. Britling Sees It Through , which was published in 1916. There is also correspondence to Seigfried Sassoon. There is a one page memoir of Wells by one of his secretaries, Winnifred Classey. The collection also consists of an extensive holding of periodicals containing articles by and about Wells. There have been five accruals. The collection is supplemented by a large number of Wells' books which have been catalogued. See Library Research News 7, no. 2 (Autumn 1983).

Type of Work:

Fantasy / science fiction novel Setting
England; late nineteenth century, and hundreds of thousands of years in the future Principal Characters
The Time Traveler, an inquisitive, scientific man
Weena, a future woman Story Overveiw
One Thursday evening, four or five men assembled for dinner at a friend's home near London. But as the evening passed, their host failed to appear. Finally, at half past seven the guests agreed it was a pity to spoil a good dinner and seated themselves to a delicious meal. The main topic of their conversation was time travel, a subject their host had seriously argued as a valid theory during an earlier dinner. He had gone so far as to show them the model of a curious machine he had built, which, he declared, could travel through the fourth dimension - time. While the guests conversed, the door suddenly opened and in limped their host. He was in a state of disarray. His coat was dusty, dirty and smeared with green; his hair was markedly grayer than the last time they had seen him, his face pale, and his expression haggard and drawn as if by intense suffering. As he stumbled back through the door in tattered, bloodstained socks, he promised his guests that be would return shortly with an explanation for his actions and appearance. Soon after, the gentleman did reappear, and commenced with his remarkable story:
