H.G. Wells (1866 - 1946)
Alongside Frenchman Jules Verne, Herbert George (H.G.) Wells is known as one of the founding literary fathers of science-fictiona label he always resisted. Instead, he called his works "scientific romances," stressing their concrete humanity and de-emphasizing the abstract ideas at play. A prolific and political journalist as well, the outspoken, larger-than-life figure is still best known for a string of books written at the beginning of his career that all toy with ideas of humanity gone scientifically and fantastically awry. Wells was born into British poverty on Sept. 21, 1866, and he was not shy about glorifying his lower-class beginnings. He later won a scholarship to what is now the elite Royal College of Science, where he studied under T.H. Huxley, the esteemed Darwinist. His early exposure to poverty, however, would mark him for the rest of his days; nearly a lifelong Socialist, Wells believed modern civilization, with its profound capitalist class divisions, was doomed, and that Communist ideals were the remedy. Not coincidentally, Wells's first novel, "The Time Machine" (1895), was written to relieve his poverty and serves as a harsh critique of capitalism. In it, a man travels to the future and finds a nightmarish dystopia in which two distinct species have evolved from the ruling and working classes. The novel struck a chord with Victorian England, a heavily industrialized country of Haves and Have-Nots, and became a success. Wells followed "The Time Machine" with "The Island of Dr. Moreau" (1896), "The Invisible Man" (1897), and "The War Between the Worlds" (1898). All were hits and solidified Wells's place in the science-fiction canon; the description in the last of a Martian invasion of earth was so terrifying that when it was adapted as a radio play in 1938 by American Orson Welles as a "real" emergency broadcast, it sent thousands of listeners into a panic.

Biography
Herbert George Wells was born in 1866 in Bromley, Kent. His career as an author was fostered by an unfortunate accident as a child. He broke his leg and spent the mandatory rest period reading every book which he could find. Wells was awarded a scholarship and furthered his education at the Normal School of Science in London. It was at the Normal School that Wells came under the wing of the famous biologist Thomas H. Huxley. Wells' "science fiction" (although he never called it such)was clearly influenced by his studies at the Normal School and his interest in biology. H.G. Wells gained fame with his first major fiction work: The Time Machine in 1895. Soon after the publication of this book, Wells followed with The Island of Dr. Moreau The Invisible Man (1897), and perhaps his most famous popular work: The War of the Worlds Over the years Wells became concerned with the fate of human society in a world where technology and scientific study were advancing at a rapid pace. For a period he was a member of The Fabian Society, a group of social philosophers in London. Wells's later works became less science fiction and more social critique. The accuracy of the "science" in Wells's work has often been called into question. It is rumored that Wells and the French novelist Jules Verne actually criticized each other's writing. Wells's claim was that "Verne couldn't write himself out of a paper sack" and Verne accused Wells of having "scientifically implausible ideas." The science may not be accurate, but the adventure and philosophy in those books makes Wells' early science fiction fun and fascinating to read.

H.G. Wells
The English writer Herbert George Wells, born in Bromley, Kent, was one of the world's most prominent literary personalities in the era between 1895 and 1920. With Jules Verne, he was the inventor of SCIENCE FICTION; in the tradition of Dickens, he was a master of the comic novel; in his prime he was also a self-appointed prophet and popular advisor to the public on virtually every acute problem that confronted the modern world. His father was a shopkeeper, his mother a lady's maid. Wells left school at the age of 14 but 4 years later won a scholarship to the Normal School of Science in South Kensington, where he studied under Thomas Henry Huxley. Another grant took him to London University, from which he graduated with a degree in biology in 1890. By the time he was 30 years of age he had already embarked on his famous series of scientific romances, notably The Invisible Man (1897) and The TIME MACHINE. It was while he was living in Woking that he wrote The WAR OF THE WORLDS. He incorporated many places in and around Woking into his story, including the landing of the Martians on nearby Horsell Common.

Universally known as H.G. Wells, he was one of the most popular and widely known authors of his time. This was partly the result of the amazingly wide variety of his interests and subject matter, and although he is perhaps most widely known nowadays as a pioneer of science fiction he is still also celebrated as a (sometimes comic) observer of the English.
Wells was born in Kent. His father is variously described as a failed shopkeeper and professional cricketer, and he himself after an unsuccessful spell as an apprentice draper became first a student teacher in Midhurst and eventually, by dint of various scholarships, made his way to the Normal School of Science in South Kensington (now part of one of Britain's leading scientific institutions, Imperial College). In the Normal School he was taught by, among others, the distinguished biologist T.H. Huxley.
The struggles of his early years provide the background of his semi-autobiographical comic novels such as 'Love And Mr. Lewisham' (1900), 'Kipps' (1905) and 'The History Of Mr Polly' (1910). To some extent such works were also attempts at social commentary, and his interest in contemporary political issues also inspired such novels as 'Ann Veronica' (1909) dealing with feminist issues and 'Tono Bungay' (also 1909) dealing with the power of modern advertising. He continued to display his political enthusiasms as a member of the Fabian Society, then the major intellectual wing of the Labour party, along with colleagues such as

Wells, Herbert George Wells, Herbert George (H. G. Wells), , English author. Although he is probably best remembered for his works of science fiction, he was also an imaginative social thinker, working assiduously to remove all vestiges of Victorian social, moral, and religious attitudes from 20th-century life. He was apprenticed to a draper at 14 and was later able through grants and scholarships to attend the Univ. of London (grad. 1888). Inspired by the teaching of T. H. Huxley, Wells taught biology until 1893, when he began his career as a novelist. His early books, full of fantasy and fascinating pseudoscientific speculations, exemplify the political and social beliefs of his time. They include The Time Machine The Wonderful Visit The Invisible Man (1897), and The War of the Worlds (1898). In the novels of his middle period he turned from the fantastic to the realistic, delineating with great energy and color the world he lived in. These books, considered his finest achievement, include Kipps Tono-Bungay (1909), and
