Stanley John Weyman was born at 54 Broad Street, Ludlow , Shropshire, the son of a solicitor and educated at Ludlow Grammar School, Shrewsbury School and Christ Church College, Oxford. He began writing in a minor way while at Oxford, where he read history, and increased his output in the following years with articles for The Cornhill magazine . He in fact spent ten years as a barrister before turning to a literary career full time, due largely to the influence of the magazine's editor. Weyman travelled abroad and his experiences and observations provided him with much of the background for the historical stories and romances for which he became well known. On one occasion he was arrested under suspicion of being a spy in the south of France and was only released after the intervention of the British Ambassador. Spiritwalk Library Project Gutenberg http://www.gutenberg.net Project Gutenberg is the Internet's oldest producer of FREE electronic books (eBooks or eTexts). It intends to put as many books on-line as possible and to gather these on line works into one central location. It is a terrific service of the University of Illinois.
Project Gutenberg is the brainchild of Michael Hart, who in 1971 decided that it would be a really good idea if lots of famous and important texts were freely available to everyone in the world. Since then, he has been joined by hundreds of volunteers who share his vision. Now, more than thirty years later, Project Gutenberg has the following figures (as of November 8th 2002): 203 New eBooks released during October 2002, 1975 New eBooks produced in 2002 (they were 1240 in 2001) for a total of 6267 Total Project Gutenberg eBooks. 119 eBooks have been posted so far by Project Gutenberg of Australia

Tautphoeus, Jermima (Montgomery), Baroness von (1807-1893) At Odds (1863) Bavaria in Napoleon's time, the family history interwoven with the disasters of South Germany from Hohenlinden to Hofer’s insurrection in Tyrol. Love plot: how a young man is obliged to marry a girl whom he has compromised by pure accident, while he loves her sister. Their quarrels, especially their political differences, last a long time and coincide with many signal historical events. The romantic interest is intense, from the father’s death at Hohenlinden and the arrival of a French detachment at the Countess’s castle, to the conclusion. [Comments from Ernest A. (1909) Interest largely topographical Holborn, Highgate, and Kent being the scenes, especially Holborn; the streets, the houses, and the local characters are pictured with the fondness of the native antiquary. Boswell, Mrs. Garrick, Abernethy, Collingwood and other naval notabilities, the medical staff at “Bart.’s,” etc., are brought before us with various degrees of intimacy. 1803-1805.
