How to cook a whale found dead.
This is my 1995 translation of the George Hunt 1914 translation of a old Kwakuitl receipe given by Elie Hunt in the Kwakuitl language. Click herefor a text transcript of the George Hunt translation . A brief biograpy and history of the recipe collection is here. Most importantly, you cannot eat it all by yourself! So the first step is to call for a party and invite all your friends, relatives, and local dignitaries. A special occasion, like the finding of a whale, calls for the use of ceremonial names. Though a hunter, a man, has found the whale, preparing food is women's work, and therefore the daughter of the hunter has the rights to prepare the whale. She is given the ceremonial name, Place-of-cutting-Blubber. Note that it is the daughter who has the rights, not the wife(s), due to the family rights in a matrilineal society. Once everybody is ready, you bring tools, and the hunter who found the whale leads everybody in their canoes to the spot where he found it. The father of the hunter has the honor of speaking for the daughter of the hunter to "make a toast" for the occasion. It is customary to first declare how wonderful the whale is, being full of delicious blubber, etc.. Then you should give the choicest piece (the dorsal fin) to the ranking dignitary, who is typically the chief of the village. Everybody else gets an equal size piece of the whale according to the order of their rank. The first piece starts at the whale neck, and they work from the top down and from the head to the tail. Generally the pieces are cut about a fathom (6 feet) in width. After the ceremonial pieces are given out, the women go to work to gather the remaining fat from the whale. The last step is cut off a piece of the tale of the whale.

The British author George Orwell , pen name of Eric Arthur Blair, b. Motihari, India, June 25, 1903, d. London, Jan. 21, 1950, achieved prominence in the late 1940s as the author of two brilliant satires attacking totalitarianism. Familiarity with the novels, documentaries, essays, and criticism he wrote during the 1930s and later has since established him as one of the most important and influential voices of the century. Orwell's parents were members of the Indian Civil Service, and, after an education at Eton College in England, Orwell joined (1922) the Indian Imperial Police in Burma, an experience that later found expression in the novel Burmese Days (1934). Individual Whales Finback whale Lunch: Lunch has very little dorsal fin left and was given that name because it looks like a shark came along and bit it's fin off for "lunch". In truth, Lunch lost it's fin when it was hit by a twin engine boat propeller. Lunch has been seen throughout the Gulf of Maine since 1982 but was first observed with a calf in 1995. The calf was given the name "T-time" for a T shaped scar on it's side. Lunch is often a very approachable whale, we have seen her on many of our trips over the years, and always look forward to our first meeting of the year. Finback whale George: George was the first finback cataloged by Allied Whale back in 1977, so was named after the first U.S. president George Washington. If we are lucky enough to see George this summer it will mark the 20th year that this whale has been known. George happens to be a very big finback whale with a fin which is thin and pointed at the end. George's fin has a small slice out of the bottom trailing edge and two nicks on the top about a foot apart. Although George has never been seen with a calf it is not known whether this whale is male or female. This past summer Allied Whale researchers were able to collect a skin sample from George and through DNA testing will soon be able to answer this question.

My current research is directed towards modelling some of the cognitive processes underlying observational drawing activity. Following Ernst Gombrich's characterization of stylistic development in terms of 'schema and correction', and John Willats' more recent work on drawing systems and denotation systems, I take an essentially 'schematic' view of drawing, according to which drawing expertise develops through the acquisition, specialization and differentiation of appropriate 'knowledge schemas'. Kenneth Beittel's research in the 1970s identified the central importance of 'strategic knowledge' in drawing - the overarching knowledge which enables a skilled artist to make appropriate and timely decisions concerning the form and disposition of elements at each stage. Thus, in addition to (perceptual) schemas controlling the 'pick-up' of visual information, and (graphical) schemas embodying knowledge of representational means, it is also necessary to consider the (strategic) schemas which control the deployment of the artist's specialized perceptual and technical skills. Elements of strategic knowledge - elicited from visual recordings of drawing sessions and from artists' verbal reports - can be encoded, providing a basis for the development of grounded, computational models simulating aspects of drawing process. To the extent that this approach enables alternative strategies to be made explicit, and their pictorial consequences to be understood, it is envisaged that the research will have specific relevance to the teaching and learning of observational drawing.

A valuable component of the finback research program at Allied Whale is our ability to recognize individual whales from year to year. Recognizing a whale in the field is like encountering an old friend. Resightings of well-known animals offer opportunities to expand our base of knowledge by enabling us to monitor life history parameters over many years. For this reason, we would like to pay tribute to one of our oldest friends, George (#0001), whom we have known for 19 years!
George was the first finback to be catalogued in our database, so we thought it appropriate to name this whale after the United States' first president, George Washington. We have since shortened the name to George. Despite the rather generic markings of this whale, the enormours size and presence of this animal distinguish it even among more distinctively marked individuals. With a large, swept-back dorsal fin and sleek black back, George is the quintessential finback whale.
George was first sighted in July of 1977, long before the formal start of photo-identification efforts on this species. George was not seen again until 1981, but has been sighted near Mount Desert Rock every year since that time, except in 1983, 1984, 1994, and 1995. This fifteen-year span of sightings provides the longest life history record of any finback whale. For most of these years, George was consistently accompanied by a small finback that Allied Whale researchers dubbed Martha (#0002). In 1986 George was seen with Dent (#0023), Shrapnel (#0118) and El Tigre (#0042). In 1988, George was seen with Raggedy (#0006) and Splinter (#0032). From late 1988 to 1993, George was only seen alone. George was sighted on sevel occasions this summer between mid-June and late July, both on its own and in company of an many as three other finbacks.

III I F I first met Miller at the end of 1936, when I was passing trrough Paris on my way to Spain. What most intrigued me about him was to find that he felt no interest in the Spanish war whatever. He merely told me in forcible terms that to go to Spain at that moment was the act of an idiot. He could understand anyone going there from purely selfish motives, out of curiosity, for instance, but to mix oneself up in such things from a sense obligation Marxist Quarterly The Scholar Gipsy In Max and the White Phagocytes The Dream of Philip the Second whale what accepting about anything, one just writes Mind in Chains) Literary criticism which aims at being Marxist must... proclaim that no book written at the present time Hamlet one any The Black Cat The Tell-tale Heart The Fall of the House of Usher Tales Minuit . The thing that immediately strikes one about Minuit is that there is no reason why any of the events in it should happen. Everything is completely arbitrary; there is no emotional sequence. But this is exactly what one does not why care , of really believing If one looks at the books of personal reminiscence written about the war of 1914-18, one notices that nearly all that have remained readable after a lapse of time are written from a passive, negative angle. They are the records of something completely meaningless, a nightmare happening in a void. That was not actually the truth about the war, but it was the truth about the individual reaction. The soldier advancing into a machine-gun barrage or standing waist-deep in a flooded trench knew only that here was an appalling experience in which he was all but helpless. He was likelier to make a good book out of his helplessness and his ignorance than out of a pretended power to see the whole thing in perspective. As for the books that were written during the war itself, the best of them were nearly all the work of people who simply turned their backs and tried not to notice that the war was happening. Mr E. M. Forster has described how in 1917 he read

II W HEN one says that a writer is fashionable one practically always means that he is admired by people under thirty. At the beginning of the period I am speaking of, the years during and immediately after the war, the writer who had the deepest hold upon the thinking young was almost certainly Housman. Among people who were adolescent in the years 1910-25, Housman had an influence which was enormous and is now not at all easy to understand. In 1920, when I was about seventeen, I probably knew the whole of the Shropshire Lad by heart. I wonder how much impression the Shropshire Lad With rue my heart is laden
For golden friends I had,
For many a roselipt maiden
And many a lightfoot lad. By brooks too broad for leaping
The lightfoot boys are laid;
The roselipt girls are sleeping
In fields where roses fade. It just tinkles. But it did not seem to tinkle in 1920. Why does the bubble always burst? To answer that question one has to take account of the external rentier felt it is a valuable document.
