by Ronald Bruce Meyer Galileo imprisoned S o this vindictive prince embroiled the Roman Church in the greatest blunder in its history. Initially there was an attempt to ban sale of the book, but it had already been circulated across Europe. Urban then fed Galileo to the dogs of the Inquisition, along with some of his defenders. When Father Castelli pleaded on Galileo's behalf that "nothing that can be done can now hinder the earth from revolving," the Benedictine was banished in disgrace. Ricciardi, who wrote the preface to the banned book, was fired from the papal staff. The Florentine Inquisitor who approved the printing of the Dialogo was reprimanded. With his advocates and friends silenced, Galileo had to face the authorities alone. The trial documents, long suppressed by Rome, reveal that Galileo was ordered, in harsh language, to come to trial at Rome; that if he did not comply, said the Pope, he was to be "brought in chains"; that the protests of his friends and the Florentine ambassador were ignored; that once in Rome, being nearly seventy years of age, suffering from hernia, insomnia, and near-blindness from gazing at the sun through his telescope, Galileo was kept waiting for several months; and that he was several times threatened with torture. His whereabouts for 21-24 June are omitted from the documents of the episode. Scholars who have studied the documents (Favaro, Fahie) suggest that Galileo was actually in prison during that time, though the

The Myth of the Flat Earth
Summary by Jeffrey Burton Russell for the American Scientific Affiliation Conference August 4, 1997 at Westmont College How does investigating the myth of the flat earth help teachers of the history of science? First, as a historian, I have to admit that it tells us something about the precariousness of history. History is precarious for three reasons: the good reason that it is extraordinarily difficult to determine "what really happened" in any series of events; the bad reason that historical scholarship is often sloppy; and the appalling reason that far too much historical scholarship consists of contorting the evidence to fit ideological models. The worst examples of such contortions are the Nazi and Communist histories of the early- and mid-twentieth century. Contortions that are common today, if not widely recognized, are produced by the incessant attacks on Christianity and religion in general by secular writers during the past century and a half, attacks that are largely responsible for the academic and journalistic sneers at Christianity today. A curious example of this mistreatment of the past for the purpose of slandering Christians is a widespread historical error, an error that the Historical Society of Britain some years back listed as number one in its short compendium of the ten most common historical illusions. It is the notion that people used to believe that the earth was flatespecially medieval Christians.

War Between the States and Reconstruction
1850 to 1870
The American Civil War, along with the Napoleonic Wars and WW2, is a contender for Most-Written War. Considering that it was much shorter than the Napoleonic period, and fought in only part of one continent by two halves of a not-over-populous country, we think that the War Between the States wins. Naturally, this bibliography is not exhaustive, does not dent the surface, indeed is hardly a fingerprint on the surface. If you wish to write about specific battles in detail, in homage to Killer Angels , you are cordially invited to become a Civil War historian. If you want details of everyday life for non-battle stories, you will find a good guide below. Note how many period sources are available in reprint, especially for the re-enactor. This is a period when newspapers and magazines of the period can give you a lot of background detail, like how people of education spoke, and how dialect sounded to them. These periodicals can always be obtained on microfilm. We begin this period in the long tense decade during which the war nearly broke out several times.

The Early Church and Science
Before we complete our survey of the teachings of the early church on the early chapters of Genesis it is necessary to discuss a number of general scientific issues that often crop up. One of the most frequent criticisms of the church fathers is made about their anti-intellectualism. Tertullian is the church father who more than any other has been taken to epitomise this view. Tertullian wrote:
  • Their failure to establish any means of accountability to allow the resolution of disputes was already appreciated by Diodorus (c.90-21 BC), Galen (c.130-200 AD) and Claudius Ptolemy (2nd cent. AD) (and other leading thinkers of the 2nd century. Plato and Aristotle being responsible for Valentinian Gnosticism.
  • 3. ) Tertullian himself made use of philosophical (particularly Stoic) ideas in his writings. He agreed with Plato on the matter of the immortality of the soul. He even claimed (as Philo and Justin Martyr had before him) that the philosophers borrowed from the Jewish Scriptures. Like all writers, he assumed that he was able to write theology without incorporating his own presuppositions.
