You are members of a Star Trek Federation surveying party sent to map the surface of a newly-discovered, Class-M planet. While orbiting the planet, you experience navigation trouble and crash-land on the planet's surface. Natives (living in stone age conditions) rescue you from the debris and take you under their care. Since you have all been professionally trained in philology, within only a few weeks you have learned their language and begin conversing comfortably with them about how they live, what they believe, who you are, and where you have come from. One day you carelessly mention that their planet is spherical. Until now, the natives were listening to you with a large measure of curiosity and respect, but now they are either amused at your attempt to trick them or angry at your apparent deceitfulness. Sensing your mistake, you protest that they have misunderstood your intent, and that you are telling them the truth. Being reasonable life-forms, the natives ask you to show them proof that their planet is spherical. You show them a photograph of their planet (below), but they cleverly explain even this in ways consistent with their flat Earth theory (besides, a photograph would be perceived as an argument from authority by these stone age people, rather than as an argument from empirical evidence).

Stephen Jay Gould ~ Rocks of Ages ~ chap. 3 Chap. 3 ~ Historical Reasons for Conflict John William Draper - History of the Conflict between Religion and Science Andrew Dickson White (1832-1918) - A History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom Draper: "The history of science is . . . A narrative of the conflict of two contending powers, the expansive force of the human intellect . . . And the compressing arising from traditionary [sic] faith. . . . Faith is in its nature unchangeable, stationary; Science is in its nature progressive . . ." (quoted on 118). Draper was especially hostile to Catholicism: "Roman Christianity and Science are recognized by their respective adherents as being absolutely incompatible; they cannot exist together; one must yield to the other . . ." (quoted on 119) Draper presents the flat-earth theory as an example of an absurd position defended by "Roman Christianity." Pause for discussion Do you agree with Draper’s statement that religious "Faith is . . . unchangeable, stationary"?

"RETRO-PROGRESSING"
Ariel A. Roth
Origins EDITORIAL As one browses through the history section of a library, one of the volumes that is likely to catch one's attention is The Discoverers by Daniel Boorstin. It is an impressive, 700-page volume. Published in 1983, it chronicles in a semi-popular style selected aspects of man's discoveries. Two chapters entitled "The Prison of Christian Dogma" and "A Flat Earth Returns" deal with the outlandish concept of an earth that is flat instead of spherical.
Boorstin has impressive academic credentials from Harvard and Yale, and has held prestigious positions such as the Librarian of Congress, Director of the National Museum of History and Technology, and Senior Historian of the Smithsonian Institution. In The Discoverers he reflects the popular view that the ancient Greeks, including Aristotle and Plato, believed Earth to be a sphere; however, after the rise of Christianity a period of "scholarly amnesia" set in which lasted from around 300 to 1300 A.D. During this time, according to Boorstin, "Christian faith and dogma replaced the useful [spherical] image of the world that had been so slowly, so painfully, and so scrupulously drawn by ancient geographers." The "spherical" view was replaced by the concept of a flat earth, which Boorstin characterizes as "pious caricatures." Boorstin bolsters his case by mentioning a couple of minor writers — Lactantius and Cosmas — who believed in a flat earth and lived during this "dark age." He also implicates the powerful authority of St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430), who "heartily agreed" that antipodes "could not exist."
