Gilbert White's House
The Rev. Gilbert White (1720-1793) was author of the world famous 'Natural History of Selborne' and is regarded as England's first ecologist. He lived in The Wakes most of his life. The rooms have been furnished in the 18th century style and include items of his furniture, beautifully embroidered bed hangings and portraits of his family. The original manuscript is also on display. The Garden
The garden is well documented by White and restoration to its 18th century form is nearly complete. Already established are his 'Quincunx', Six Quarters displaying many of the fascinating cultivated plants known to White and Naturalists garden with pond and native species. His brick path leads to the stone ha ha, sundial and part of his fruit wall and in the park a revolving 'Wine Pipe' surveys the parkland and magnificent beech-clad hanger. Old varieties of vegetables and hot beds for melons and cucumbers add further interest. There is always a good selection of unusual plants for sale. The Oates Museum
Two interesting exhibitions commemorate the Oates family and their exploits. Captain Lawrence Oates accompanied Scott to the South Pole and uttered the famous words "I am just going outside. I may be some time" as he left his tent to walk to his death: relics of their ill fated expedition are on display. His uncle, Frank Oates, was a remarkable Victorian explorer and his journeys to South America and South Africa are graphically illustrated.

ANOTHER SOURCE Selborne is renowned for its scenery and its charming buildings, but above all for Gilbert White (17201793) who wrote the world-famous book
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~villages/selborne.htm
Selborne
Facing The Wakes, Gilbert White's home, is a small building that was once a butcher's shop. In his Garden Kalendar White records that in 1756 he planted four lime trees in front of it to hide 'the sight of blood and filth from ye windows' (see plaque). Only two of the trees survive.
At the far south end of the village there is a unique drinking-fountain, a splendid piece of Victorian ironwork, in the form of a fierce lion's head, flanked by windmills, the water flowing from the lion's mouth into a trough. It is inscribed "Presented by" but there is no name. The adjacent door has an inscription: 'This water supply was given to Selborne by voluntary subscriptions in memory of Gilbert White 1894'. Behind the door there is a hydraulic ram that pumped water to stand-pipes in the village until 1934, when piped water was supplied. ALTERNATE TEXT (from another source)
This small Hampshire village is known internationally as the birthplace of Gilbert White, the great and famous naturalist. His book, The Natural History and Antiquities ofSelborne, is recognised as a classic of natural science and English writing. A celebration to mark the bicentenary of the publication of this book was held in 1989. Gilbert White was born here, in his grandfather's vicarage in 1720. He was ordained as a priest after graduating from Oriel College, Oxford, but was never inducted as vicar of Selborne as the living then was held by Magdalen College. During his lifetime in Selborne, as well as studying and writing about the natural world, he took a great interest in the village school which had been started by his grandfather.

Our school is located in Perivale in the London Borough of Ealing, but it gets its name from the village of Selborne in Hampshire. The Selborne Society was founded in 1885 to commemorate the life of Gilbert White (1720-1793) , the Curate of Selborne in Hampshire and father of British natural history. As well as his acute observations and understanding of the relationship between living organisms and their environment, White was also a talented writer. His observations are recorded in a series of letters published in 1789 as "The Natural History of Selborne", now a classic of English literature and still in print. In 1902, members of the Brent Valley branch of the Selborne Society created a bird sanctuary at Perivale Wood . The Society purchased the wood in 1920 to mark the bicentenary of Gilbert White's birth. It was declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest (S.S.S.I.) in 1957 and upgraded to Local Nature Reserve Status in 1974. Perivale's links with Selborne in Hampshire led the school to being named after that village. The pupils of our school have visited the village and Gilbert White's house, and the school has access to Perivale Wood, which provides excellent facilities for the observation of birds, mammals, pond life, butterflies and other insects.

The beautiful village of Selborne in Hampshire and its delightful countryside is famous for its association with the 18th century naturalist Gilbert White. His book, The Natural History of Selborne’ meticulously records his observations of the plants and wild life of this part of England. Gilbert loved the area so much that he knew the habits of each plant, bird and animal and their habitats. Each year, thousands of people, who have come to delight in Gilbert White's book, ,journey from all over the world to visit Selborne. Gilbert White was a clergyman and his home was the “Wakes”, the large vicarage at Selborne. He was apparently a good clergyman, making visits to his parishioners in all weathers. Despite of his fascination with plants and animals, he did not neglect his duties. This description of Gilbert White is taken from Anthony Rye’s book, “Gilbert White and his Selborne”: “He was a little, thin, prim, upright man, who used to go poking about in the lanes and hedges with his stick, and then rather nattily stop to flick the dust off his shoes with his handkerchief.

For all the field labs., dress for wet, cold conditions, and bring a weatherproof field notebook for notes and sketches. These field sessions are intended to acquaint you with some of the major tree species native to the Pacific Northwest, to introduce some common plant community types, and to observe how environmental factors (especially variations in temperature and moisture availability) influence the appearance and structural character of forest stands. Some familiarity with trees in their natural settings will give you a foundation for understanding how forests may respond to the atmospheric changes we will discuss in class.

    Some famous Oriel names
There is a College tradition that Sir Thomas More was a student at Oriel, but this cannot be substantiated. A tradition in his family placed him at Canterbury College (where the Canterbury Quad of Christ Church now stands). Another tradition suggests that he may have lodged in St Mary Hall , but there are no records to prove or disprove this. However, it is certain that all the following were at Oriel: Matthew Arnold (1822-1888)
    Fellow 1845-1852
Poet and Critic Thomas Arnold (1795-1842)
    Fellow 1815-1821
Headmaster of Rugby School and Regius Professor of Modern History Thomas Arundel (1353-1414)
    Student 1373
Chancellor of England and Archbishop of Canterbury. Opposed Richard II and crowned Henry of Bolingbroke as Henry IV. George Bryan 'Beau' Brummell (1778-1840)
    Undergraduate 1794
Dandy and arbiter of fashion Joseph Butler (1692-1752)
    Student 1715-1721
Philosopher. Bishop of Bristol and Dean of St Paul's 1740. Bishop of Durham 1750. Thomas Hughes (1822-1896) Undergraduate 1841-1845 Author of Tom Brown's Schooldays and founder member of the Christian Socialists.
