2.1 The History of Science Poetry
Science Fiction Poetry has a prehistory from before the genre of Science Fiction was established. To understand this, we consider the history of natural history and science in poetry from Ancient Greece through the early 20th Century, when Science Fiction and Fantasy became recognized as distinct genres, and note the poetic output of major non-genre scientists. Poetry was at one time the language of philosophy, science, and all serious thought. Major treatments of Science expressed as Poetry included the works of Lucretius (especially De Rerum Natura ), Parmenides of Elea, Archytas (Pythagorean general, statesman, philanthropist, educator) and Empedocles of Acragas, plus the "Phaenomena" of Aratus and the Latin "Astronomica" of Manilius. Ancient Greek MOUSIKE of Homer, Pindar, and Anaximander preceded prose culture, until Pythagoras identified music with mathematics, Aristotle distinguished Poetry from Rhetoric, and poetry began to separate from science. Aristotle's

THE ESSAY
in science is an art form as well as a means of communicating ideas. All scientists publish their findings somewhere, but relatively few produce books or monographs. Even fewer produce essays. Modern readers who are interested in evolution or natural history usually recognize the names Gould, Zimmer and Dawkins as essayists. But relatively few are those who have read Mayr, Simpson, Dobzhansky and many older writers. All of these authors are worth reading today. In some cases they are worth reading not only for the beauty of their prose and the forcefulness of their argument, but also to discover what earlier generations of scientists once thought. Darwin and Wallace are omitted here on purpose. You will find them on my Darwiniana Page

This trip is funded by a grant to Baruch College entitled, Darwin and Darwinism: Scientific Theory and Social Construction (EW 20113-93). The goal of this trip is to take photographs for web pages that disseminate information about the grant. The original program "Leadership Opportunity in Science and Humanities Education" was sponsored by three agencies: the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education, and the National Science Foundation. NOTE: This page is on our web site, but it is purposely not linked to any other page because I do not own the rights to any of the scanned images. They are there to aid us in recognition of the buildings we intend to photograph. At present this page is only for dissemination to Darwin Seminar participants and as information to the granting agencies. Sources of images are listed at the end of the document. A REQUEST FOR PICTURES : We will not be able to travel to all the places we would like within the time available. Nature Birds ... Help Like this page? Send it to a friend! Weekly Feature Archive What do you mean, you have never heard of Gilbert White? He was alive between 1720 and 1793 and was a modest bachelor who served as an Anglican priest in the parish of Selborne in Hampshire. In his lifetime he never achieved fame but he has since been proclaimed as "the father of field ornithology." Why? He had two great talents: observational skills and a flair for writing. He recorded what he saw in words that were both charming and accurate. From childhood he was a meticulous record keeper and his interests embraced all aspects of natural history and country life. Just as his words were to influence others, he was first smitten in 1768 by a copy of The Naturalist's Journal, a publication for recording the daily progress of the seasons and the associated changes in the countryside's plants, birds and animals. White began a lengthy correspondence with the book's author, Daines Barrington, and did the same with the zoologist Thomas Pennant. Encouraged by the pair, he was stirred to write a book. However, his approach was individual and unique. Rather than a treatise or an academic tome, he decided to compose letters on any subject that took his fancy. The content would be first-hand factual information but, writing in letter form, he would be free to indulge in narrative and speculation. This intimacy and informality marked the book, the Natural History of Selborne, for greatness.

Why the Tortoise? One of Ringmer's most celebrated visitors was the pioneering naturalist Gilbert White (1720 - 1793). His letters have been published under the title of The Natural History of Selbourne and are world famous for the detail in which he observed the creatures and plants around the village of Selbourne in Hampshire where he was curate. White wrote in his letter from Ringmer dated 8th October 1770 " A land tortoise, which has been kept for thirty years in a little walled court belonging to the house where I am now visiting, retires under ground about the middle of November , and comes forth again about the middle of April. When it first appears in the spring it discovers very little inclination towards food; but in the the height of summer grows voracious: Milky plants such as lettuces, dandelions, sowthistles, are its favourite dish. " With such a famous reptile as a former inhabitant the village of Ringmer has adopted the tortoise as it's symbol.
