Tracy Bunko Aeronautical Systems Center Public Affairs WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio (AFMCNS) – Test experts completed live-fire testing on the Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures system July 8 in White Sands, N.M., putting the program on track to deliver the first laser-protected transport to Air Mobility Command by 2004. The countermeasures system, known as LAIRCM, autonomously detects tracks and jams infrared threat missiles targeting slower-moving cargo aircraft. It successfully completed tests at the White Sands Missile Range Aerial Cable Facility, said Col. Michael Cappelano, LAIRCM program manager. During the tests, missiles were fired at a carrier, holding the LAIRCM system and four heat sources emulating a C-17 during takeoff, he said. Cappelano said the White Sands tests were the key end-to-end system performance tests Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center experts needed to complete their operational LAIRCM assessment. This assessment is a prerequisite for initial system production.

The McDonnell Douglas vehicle is managed by the Air Force Phillips Laboratory in support of the NASA reusable launch vehicle program. Flight test support is provided by the Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center's Space and Missile Test and Evaluation Directorate. At the conclusion of the flight, the DC-X was officially turned over to NASA. Lt. Col. Jess Sponable presented a plaque attesting to the turnover to NASA Program Manager Dan Dumbacher. TRINITY SITE Overview Trinity Site is where the first atomic bomb was tested at 5:29:45 a.m. Mountain War Time on July 16, 1945. The 19 kiloton explosion not only led to a quick end to the war in the Pacific but also ushered the world into the atomic age. All life on Earth has been touched by the event which took place here. The 51,500-acre area was declared a national historic landmark in 1975. What You'll See Included on the Trinity Site tour is Ground Zero where the atomic bomb was placed on a 100-foot steel tower. A small monument now marks the spot. Visitors also see the McDonald ranch house where the world's first plutonium core for a bomb was assembled. The missile range provides historical photographs and a Fat Man bomb casing for display. There are no ceremonies or speakers. Public Tours Dates and Times Trinity Site is open to the public twice a yearon the first Saturday in April and October. Portable toilet facilities are available on site. Hot dogs and sodas are sold at the parking lot. Cameras are allowed at Trinity Site, but their use is strictly prohibited anywhere else on White Sands Missile Range. Bataan Memorial Death March goes April 1 WHITE SANDS MISSILE RANGE, N.M. (Army News Service, Nov. 1, 2000) The 2001 Bataan Memorial Death March at White Sands Missile Range, N.M., will be conducted on April 1. This is the 13th year for the popular memorial march which recognizes the sacrifices made by thousands of U.S. and Filipino service members overwhelmed by the Japanese in the Philippine Islands during World War II. Since its inception, the memorial march has grown from about 100 participants to more than 3,000. The 26.2-mile march starts on the missile range main post, crosses hilly terrain, winds around a small mountain and returns to the finish line through sandy desert trails and washes. The elevation varies from about 4,100 to 5,300 feet. While marathon length, the memorial march is not a sanctioned marathon. The event is open to military (active-duty, Reserve, National Guard, ROTC, JROTC or retired military) and civilian teams and individuals in either heavy or light divisions. Military personnel marching in any military category must wear full field gear. Civilian marchers in any category should wear appropriate attire for a road march through desert terrain. All marchers entered in heavy division categories must also carry a 35-pound rucksack. New team rules have been instituted for the 2001 march. Teams must consist of five people. All five marchers must cross the finish line together. Team categories are male light, male military light, male military heavy, female light, female military light, female military heavy, coed military light, coed military heavy, coed light, National Guard light, National Guard heavy, ROTC light, ROTC heavy and JROTC light.

Light weight, high strength materials will be used in DC-XA's new liquid oxygen tank fabricated from aluminum lithium and liquid hydrogen tank constructed from graphite composite. These components will be integrated into the McDonnell Douglas-built reusable rocket and Huntington Beach, Calif. In 1996, the DC-X will be returned to White Sands Missile Range in January as the DC-XA, and a new series of flight tests will resume in April under a series of agreements awarded by NASA. The tests will continue to demonstrate the feasibility of a reusable rocket which has aircraft-like operability and maintainability. The Delta Clipper has demonstrated fast turnaround by being readied for flight in seven days. In addition, the reusable launch vehicle's engines were test fired twice within eight hours.
