THE 18th. CENTURY - PAGE 7 HOME PAGE 1 PAGE 2 PAGE 3 ... PAGE 10 The German version of opera buffa, Singspiel , formed the largest part of the operatic output of Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf. He wrote some 40 of them, mostly for Vienna, starting with Doktor und Apotheker . This work was very popular, and even saw an English adaptation. Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf Georg Philip Telemann While the German and Austrian courts of Vienna, Berlin and others indulged their taste for Italian opera, there was opera being written in German. Georg Philip Telemann was the most prolific and most famous composer of the first half of the 18th. century. He was music director of the Hamburg Opera from 1722, and of his more than 40 opera works, 20 were written for Hamburg. As director at Hamburg he also arranged and performed works by other composers, particularly those of his contemporary and friend, G.F. Handel. Only nine of his own works have survived to today. Georg Frederick Handel 1685 - 1759 Georg Frederick Handel was a composer of the theatre, and opera dominated his writing for over 35 years. In 1703 Handel moved to Hamburg, taking a position as second violinist at the opera house. The following year he wrote his first opera, the start of a career that saw some of the best operas of the period. Included in Handel's opus are Il pastor fido Floridante Scipione Riccardo primo Ariodante Alcina , and Serse . In 1712 Handel moved permanently to London, and he is now considered an English composer of German birth.

Christoph Martin Wieland (1733 - 1813), der heute etwas im Schatten seiner berühmten Zeitgenossen wie Klopstock, Lessing oder Goethe steht, war zu Lebzeiten der meistgelesene Autor und auch außerhalb Deutschlands bekannt. Reemtsma, ein Wieland-"Fan" und -Experte (er promovierte über ihn), stellte nun schon zum zweiten Mal ein Werk Wielands vor, nachdem er vor einem Jahr einen Abend über den "Aristipp" gestaltet hatte (vgl. auch die Buchbesprechung von Christian Fuhrhop Die Verserzählung "Kombabus" handelt von einem Mann (Kombabus), der die Frau des Königs, der gleichzeitig sein Freund ist, auf eine lange Reise begleiten soll. Da er fürchtet, der attraktiven Frau nicht widerstehen zu können, die Reise aber auch nicht ablehnen kann, entschließt er sich dazu, sich selbst zu kastrieren. Auf der Reise versucht die Frau des Königs, Kombabus zu verführen, was zu bizarren Situationen führt, aber natürlich nicht gelingen kann. Da es trotzdem Gerüchte gibt, Kombabus habe mit der Frau des Königs ein Verhältnis, will der König ihn nach der Rückkehr hinrichten lassen.

Thuringia, part of Germany's geographic center characterized by diverse highlands, lively cities and romantic towns. The Wasserkuppe is the birthplace of hang gliding. On this highest elevation of the Rhon, even today many original gliders can be admired. Further east, and separated only by the Werra river, runs the long stretch of the Thuringian forest, characterized by gently rolling hills, mountains and steep valleys. The forests are traversed by a famous hiking trail, the 104 miles long Rennsteig, running from the Werra in the west to the Saale river in the southeast. At the foot of the mountains, important cities with magnificent buildings were founded.In Eisenach, Johann Sebastian Bach was born. High above the city, in the Wartburg, one of Germany's most famous castles, Martin Luther found refuge from persecution. In Weimar, Goethe, Schiller, Herder and Wieland lived and created literary masterpieces. There are many sights to delight the visitor in Weimar, the superbly restored city of the "German Classics". Erfurt, the city of flowers, boasts a large historic section where you will find a cathedral, and St. Severin's church, old residential buildings and the medieval "Kramerbrucke", or tradesmen's bridge, which is lined on both sides by old houses.
