Sentiment and Celebrity
Nathaniel Parker Willis and the Trials of Literary Fame
THOMAS N. BAKER

Sentiment and Celebrity tells the story of a man the New York Times once called "the most talked-about author in America." A widely admired, if controversial, master of the sentimental appeal, poet and "magazinist" Nathaniel Parker Willis (1806-1867) was a pioneer in the modern business of celebrity. By charting the shape and thrust of the various controversies that surrounded Willis, this book shows how the cultural and commercial impulses that fostered the development of antebellum America's love affair with fame and fashion drew power and sustenance from the concurrent allure of genteel cultivation and sentiment.
"Although chiefly known today for his ties to Fanny Fern and Harriet Jacobs, N. P. Willis is a fascinating figure in his own right, and this book goes a long way toward explaining his significance. Baker does a fine job of exploring Willis's career while making a solid contribution to our understanding of the culture of celebrity, fashion, and society in antebellum America."Michael Winship, University of Texas at Austin
"A serious study of N. P. Willis is long overdue. Willis was an author, editor, and self-styled arbiter of taste who sparked adoration, condemnation, respect, and ridicule on a wide public stage. His life offers a fascinating perspective on the dynamics of the sentimental literary scene in which he played so important a role. By focusing attention on Willis's public persona, Baker's wonderful book illuminates the historical development of celebrity itself."Rachel Klein, University of California at San Diego

He has brought us another batch of autographs, and will let us have them upon no other terms To say the truth, we are rather glad of his proposal than otherwise. We shall look over his shoulder, however, occasionally. Here follow the letters. LETTER XXV. Dear Sir , — Will you oblige me by not writing me any more silly letters ? I really have no time to attend to them. Your most obedient servant, Jared Sparks [Jared Sparks (1789-1866)] Joseph A. Miller, Esq. Mr. Sparks' MS. has an odd appearance. The characters are large, round, black, irregular and perpendicular. The lines are close together, and the whole letter wears at first sight an air of confusion — of chaos. Still it is not very illegible upon close inspection, and would by no means puzzle a regular bred devil. We [column 2:] can form no guess in regard to any mental peculiarities from this MS. From its tout-ensemble, however, we might imagine it written by a man who was very busy among a great pile of books and papers huddled up in confusion around him. Paper blueish and fine — sealed, with the initials J. S.

Background note: Edwin Forrest is considered by many theatre historians as the first American-born actor of the first rank. Making his theatrical debut in Philadelphia at the age of 14, Forrest honed his skills in small theatres in New Orleans and the western states. The acclaim that accrued to him following his brilliant 1826 performance as Othello at the Park Theatre, New York City, launched him on a then unparalleled career of critical success and public renown. His occasionally jingoistic nationalism made him all the more popular with many fans. Forrest's fortunes took a turn during a visit to Britain in 1845, when he was hissed while playing MacBeth. Believing the British actor, Macready, responsible for his reception, Forrest began a vitriolic and very public feud that was often played out among the actors' fans and that was exacerbated by nationalist sentiments on both sides. On May 10, 1849, Macready was greeted in New York by a hostile crowd that soon devolved into a violent mob that was dispersed only by the militia. Though Forrest was not directly responsible, his reputation suffered, and he fell further in the eyes of his public due to a protracted and, once again, very public divorce, lasting from 1851 to 1869. After 1865, Forrest became increasingly debilitated by sciatica, and seldom appeared on stage.
Scope and contents: The Forrest Papers consists of 93 letters from Forrest to his friend and financial adviser, James Lawson, and 25 letters in reply. There are also 33 letters from Mrs. Forrest (Catherine Norton Sinclair Forrest), and some miscellaneous items, most importantly his bankbook and a copy of the act to incorporate the Edwin Forrest Home.

A gathering of all these men at the same time never took place: indeed, Cooper, Paulding, Prescott, and Irving were already deceased when the picture was painted. But many of these men had visited Irving at Sunnyside. Historic Hudson Valley (c) 1999 Back to About Sunnyside

Early Writers Flocked To Mammoth Cave By Bob Thompson - 2000 More has been written about Mammoth Cave National Park than any other cave system in the world. Since the beginning of guided tours in 1816, the cave has hosted a number of prominent writers, doctors, surveyors, preachers, naturalists, and historians. The one thing they all had in common was the desire to see, learn, and write about the cave. Each individual penned personal and detailed accounts of the cave, which were published in books, magazines, and newspapers. One of the earliest accounts was by Dr. Robert Montgomery Bird (1806-1854) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Bird came to Mammoth Cave in the summers of 1833 and 1835 and stayed at the Gatewood House. Mr. Gatewood, who owned the cave at the time, built a log house tavern about 100 yards from the cave's entrance (where the Mammoth Cave Hotel is today). Bird's description of Mammoth Cave was published in 1838 in the book, Peter Pilgrim, or A Rambler's Recollections. Quoting from his book, "The Mammoth Cave is still the monarch of caves. None that have ever been measured can at all compare with it. Even in extent, in grandeur; in wild, solemn, severe, unadorned majesty, it stands entirely alone. It has no brother; it is like no brother." A year before Peter Pilgrim, Bird also wrote about the 1780s settlement of Kentucky, in what is considered his best-known novel, Nick of the Woods. Bird complemented his literary career as a professor of medicine, an editor, a farmer, and a politician, as well as an accomplished artist. He actively made sketches and drawings of his travels of America (including Mammoth Cave) and Europe.

[Editorial Note: "Trance speakers" were part of the Spiritualist phenomenom of the middle decades of the nineteenth century. Cora Hatch was perhaps the best known and most successful. For a contemporary account, from Leslie's Illustrated Weekly Newspaper , along with a brief account of spiritualism, click here . The following seems to have been typical of Hatch's "discourses" during this period. It is worth noting that she did not claim to be in direct contact with any "spirit guide" or that her opinions were those of any one other than herself. Indeed, she was at some pains to distinguish her views from those of the Universalists. This might have been a sore point since contemporaries, like Leslie's reporter commonly noted the parallels between her discourses and the works of the late Rev. William Ellery Channing. Had Hatch directly claimed mediumistic powers at this point in her career, as she did earlier and later, she might have claimed to be in direct touch with Channing.
