Nathaniel Parker Willis (1806-1867) Nathaniel Parker Willis has the distinction of being, possibly, the most important 19th-century author left out of both the Norton and the Heath anthologies of American literature. After reading through his verse below, you may be surprised that anyone would take Willis seriously, but none other than Herman Melville once included him in a list of the top 8 American writers. In addition to writing numerous volumes of poetry, Willis worked as a magazine editor and travel writer in New York City in the 1840s through the 1860s. As an editor, Willis was famous as a champion of American writers and an arbiter of American literary taste. But perhaps his most enduring literary distinction is that, in addition to being the brother of Fanny Fern (Sarah Willis Parton), the famous social critic, novelist, and early feminist, Willis is also the only person to hire both Edgar Allan Poe and Walt Whitman (both of whom worked on Willis's paper). Unseen Spirits THE shadows lay along Broadway,
'Twas near the twilight-tide
And slowly there a lady fair
Was walking in her pride.

Nathaniel Parker Willis
Magazine editor, journalist, and talented essayist, Nathaniel Parker Willis brought a rare, modern sensibility to his reports on contemporary life. From 1829, when he founded the New York Mirror, until his death in 1867, Willis worked continually as an editor and journalist. Flamboyant, vain, and ambitious, he was a controversial figure in New York society, scorned by lawyer George Templeton Strong and hated by his own sister, Sarah Willis Parton, the best-selling author known as Fanny Fern. But Walt Whitman called Willis a "good natured bright fellow," while remembering his vanity, which made him "the horror of photographers." Willis wrote often about Brady's New York gallery for his Home Journal. He posed for this Imperial photograph in New York in the late 1850s. Mathew Brady Studio

The principal manufactures of the township are cotton and woollen goods (especially corduroy), and market gardening is an important industry. The limits of the township, originally called West Hoosac, were determined by a committee of the General Court of Massachusetts in f 749, and two or three years later the village was laid out. Two of the lots were immediately purchased by Captain Ephraim Williams (1715—1755), who was at the time commander of Fort Massachusetts in the vicinity; several other lots were bocight by soldiers under him; and in 1753 the proprietors organized a township governlnent. Williams was killed in the battle of Lake George on the 8th of September 1755, but while in camp in Albany, New York, a few days before the battle, he drew a will containing a small bequest for a free school at West Hoosac on condition. that the township when incorporated should be called Williamstown. The township was incorporated with that name in 1765. See A. L. Perry, Origins in Williamstown (New York, 1894; 3rd cd. 1900); and Wilhiamstown and Williams College (Norwood, Mass, 1899).

It is not the fear of death
That damps my brow;
It is not for another breath
I ask thee now;
I could die with a lip unstirred.
- paraphrase of Andre's letter to Washington [ Death 'Tis a bird I love, with its brooding note, And the trembling throb in its mottled throat; There's a human look in its swelling breast, And the gentle curve of its lowly crest; And I often stop with the fear I feel He runs so close to the rapid wheel. Not for himwho ascended Fame's ladder so high. From the round at the top he has stepped to the sky. The Death of Harrison (st. 6) [
