B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Owen Wister (1860-1938) American writer whose stories helped to establish the cowboy as an archetypical, individualist hero. Wister and his predecessor James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) created the basic Western myths and themes, which were later popularized by such writers as Zane Grey and Max Brand. But before Wister, Theodore Roosevelt published his book The Winning of the West (1889-1896) to make clear the meaning of the land beyond the Mississippi to the whole country, and Mark Twain and Bret Harte wrote their stories about frontiersmen. Although Westerns are normally set in the 19th-century, they are not considered simply historical novel, but special kind of moral tales, in which the protagonist, usually male, must defend his personal values of life in a violent confrontation with socially destructive forces. "He was evidently howling the remarkable strain of yells that the cow-punchers invented as the speech best understood by cows - "Oi-ee, yah, whoop-yah-ye-ee, oooo-oop, oop, oop-oop-oop-oop-yah-hee!" But that gives you no idea of it. Alphabets are worse than photographs. It is not the lungs of every man that can produce these effects, not even from armies, eagles, or mules were such sounds ever heard on earth. The cow-puncher invented them. And when the last cow-puncher is laid to rest (if that, alas! have not already befallen) the yells will be forever gone."

Owen Wister (1860-1938). Germantown. By Thomas Kruse
http://www.ncteamericancollection.org/litmap/wister_owen__pa.htm
Owen Wister - (1860-1938) Germantown By Thomas Kruse I. Biography Owen Wister was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania on July 14, 1860. Wister was as fluent in French as he was in English. He spent time in a Swiss boarding school and briefly in a school in England. However, he received most of his schooling at the Germantown Academy and St. Paul's school in Concord, New Hampshire, which he got into in 1873. Wister was very intelligent which is obvious since he graduated from Harvard in 1882. At first, Wister wanted a music career, which is why he studied at the Paris Conservatoire under Ernest Guiraud, shortly after graduation. Due to bad health and a declining interest in music, he moved west near Buffalo. In the fall of 1885, he entered Harvard Law school and graduated in 1888. In 1891, he knew that his career had been determined in becoming a writer. In 1902, he wrote his most famous novel called The Virginian . It was a best seller for six months, and by 1938, it had sold over a million and a half copies. Wister married his second cousin in 1898. They had three sons and three daughters together. On July 21, 1938, Owen Wister died of a cerebral hemorrhage. II. Best Known Literary Works

He had "come many miles from somewhere across the vast horizon, as the dust upon him showed" to the town of Medicine Bow. He joined a game of poker. It was now the Virginian's turn to bet, or leave the game, and he did not speak at once. Therefore Trampas spoke. "Your bet, you son-of-a—." The Virginian's pistol came out, and his hand lay on the table, holding it unaimed. And with a voice as gentle as ever, the voice that sounded almost like a caress, but drawling a very little more than usual, so that there was almost a space between each word, he issued his orders to the man Trampas: "When you call me that, smile." And he looked at Trampas across the table. Yes, the voice was gentle. But in my ears it seemed as if somewhere the bell of death was ringing; and silence, like a stroke, fell on the large room.

  • Pennsylvania: By the Book
By Cheryl A. Petersohn Pennsylvania was founded by an author who got into trouble for his writings. No wonder this state has such a distinguished literary heritage. The Keystone State provides rich natural and intellectual resources, a varied but essentially moderate climate, and room to grow. Since its founding in 1682 by William Penn, himself the author of more than one hundred books and pamphlets supporting religious toleration, Pennsylvania has been home to countless writers. Penn's "Holy Experiment," planned to be an ideal commonwealth in America away from religious persecution, has a long history of authors whose works promote free expression of ideas and creative experimentation. This short overview of Pennsylvania authors can merely scratch the surface of a literary history that favorably follows in the footsteps of Penn's most famous work, The Great Cause of Liberty of Conscience.
