P. G. Wodehouse Appreciation Page
Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (1881-1975) was an English humorist who wrote novels, short stories, plays, lyrics, and essays, all with the same light touch of gentle satire. He is best known as the creator of the irredeemably dim and unflaggingly affable Bertie Wooster and his invincible valet Jeeves, but Wodehouse also produced multi-volume story cycles on Blandings Castle, Mr. Mulliner's extended family, Mike and Psmith, the Oldest Member, Uncle Fred, and the Drones Club. (All this is in addition to his many stand-alone novels, short stories, and plays.) Throughout his stories, Wodehouse presents a view of the world which differs from his fans would say, improves upon the focus most people have. For a variety of reasons, pigs, newts, and statues of the Infant Samuel at Prayer play significant roles in the Wodehousian view, while such things as death, taxes, and work are crowded towards the O. P. wings. The intent of this site is to provide a set of links to those sites on the World Wide Web that, in one way or another, stand with Wodehouse as he surveys the world.

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Sir P(elham) G(renville) Wodehouse (1881-1975) English comic novelist, short story writer, lyricist and playwright, best known as the creator of Jeeves, the perfect 'gentleman's gentleman,' Bertie Wooster of the Drones Club, a young bachelor aristocrat, and the absentminded Lord Emsworth of the Blandings Castle. Most of Wodehouse's works gently parodied the British aristocracy of the 1920s and 1930s. After World War II Wodehouse lived in the United States. During the decades, Wodehouse's picture of England eventually become nostalgic. "You know, Jeeves, you're by way of being rather a topper."
"I endeavour to give satisfaction, sir."
"One in a million, by Jove!"
"It is very kind of you to say so, sir."
"Well, that's about all, then, I think."
"Very good, sir."

(from 'Jeeves Takes Charge') Pelham Grenville Wodehouse was born in Guildford, Surrey, as the son of Henry Ernest Wodehouse, a British judge in Hong Kong, and Eleanor (Deane) Wodehouse. Within the family, Wodehouse's first name was abbreviated to "Plum" and later also his wife and friends used this name. Until the age of four he lived in Hong Kong with his parents. Returning to England, he spent much of his childhood in the care of various aunts. Wodehouse attended boarding schools and received his secondary education at Dulwich College, London, which he always remembered with affection. His first article for which he was paid was 'Some Aspects of Game Captaincy." Wodehouse wrote it for a competition sponsored by

The Persecution of P. G. Wodehouse ROBERT A. HALL, JR. The noted Anglo-American humorist Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (1881-1975) led, up to 1940, a life which was professionally very active and successful, but devoid of striking or soul-shaking experiences. In that year, however, there occurred an event which changed the course of his life very drastically for the next six years, and cast a lasting, though gradually diminishing, shadow over the rest of his existence until his death on February 14, 1975. He and his wife were living semi-permanently at Le Touquet, in France. The town was captured by the Germans on May 22, 1940, and on July 21, he, with the other male aliens in Le Touquet, were sent off to internment-centers, first at Huy in Belgium and then at Tost in Upper Silesia. His internment lasted until June 21, 1941, on which date he was released (solely because he was almost sixty) and was sent to Berlin, where he was joined by his wife (who had been detained in France). Up to this point, nothing untoward had happened except the detainment itself. Soon after arriving in Berlin, however, he undertook to write and record five talks describing his experiences as British Civilian Prisoner no. 796. The talks were intended to reassure his American friends that he was well, and to give a humorous description of his experience as an internee. They were made for broadcasting to the United States, with which Germany was, at the time, not at war. They were, nevertheless, also broadcast later (without Wodehouse's having been consulted) to England. Their actual content was simply a straightforward narrative, wholly unpolitical (as can be seen by reading their actual texts

P.G. Wodehouse
Profile
Pelham Grenville Wodehouse was a prolific and extremely popular writer of humorous novels. Wodehouse was the son of a Hong Kong civil servant, who retired through ill health and returned to England, firstly to Dulwich and then to Hay's House, Stableford in Shropshire. Young P. G. Wodehouse, although educated away from home at boarding school returned to Stableford for his holidays and grew to know the district well between the ages of fourteen and twenty one (when the family moved again to Cheltenham). He retained a great affection for the county, particularly the area around Stableford, which is a few miles from Bridgnorth, and it was to become one of the major sources for composite settings in the novels, together with Gloucestershire, Worcestershire and Wiltshire. Wodehouse's last, unfinished novel was Sunset at Blandings which Richard Usborne edited in 1978 after the author's death. Usborne followed up all references to Shropshire in the various Wodehouse novels, but especially this last one, and consulted contemporary railway timetables to see if fictional journeys could actually have been made. All this was in an effort to identify and locate the original of Blandings Castle. Usborne's conclusion was that it must be Buildwas , a mile or so up the Severn from Ironbridge.

I pressed down the mental accelerator. The old lemon throbbed fiercely. I got an idea. I just sit at a typewriter and curse a bit. I know I was writing stories when I was five. I don't know what I did before that. Just loafed I suppose. Success comes to a writer, as a rule, so gradually that it is always something of a shock to him to look back and realize the heights to which he has climbed.

"...Still, it's no good arguing with you, I suppose. You're as obstinate as a mule. Your mother was the same. Would insist on having you called Jefferson. No moving her. I remember once, when I was trying to reason with her on the point, she got a bucket of water and poured it over me. The room was like a lake. I can still see the cat flying from the room with its tail about a yard long. Did you know that when a cat's tail gets wet, it lengthens? It does." said Old Nick, and on this nature note took his departure.
