Tribute to the Queen Mother Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, 1900-2002
Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse, 1881-1975
In the library of Lambeth Palace the Archbishop of Canterbury took another sip of Buck-U-Uppo while he wrestled with his sermon for the Queen Mother's funeral. "How do we combine her majesty, grandeur even, with her fun, and the love for her that everyone has?" he said to his old friend and colleague, Augustine Mulliner, now Bishop of Monkton. "Strength and dignity are her clothing and she laughs at the time to come. Proverbs, 25, 31," replied Augustine. "Masterly" said the Archbishop. "Brilliant. That hits it off exactly". And he wrote it in. The twentieth century was particularly the century of the Queen Mother. She was born as it began and died shortly after it had finished. Her death is sadder because to us it seems like the end of the Wodehouse century. Her devotion to Wodehouse reflects our own. Wodehouse has been the century's chronicler. We can better understand people in every walk of life because he wrote about them, and when we re-read Wodehouse we return to relive that century.

Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (1881 - 1975) One of the greatest humorists of the twentieth century, PG Wodehouse never achieved critical acclaim but has long been a favorite of the masses. His Jeeves series especially has been adapted into plays, television series - you name it! His humorous descriptions and essays are side-splittingly funny. Here are a couple of really funny extracts: For some days it seemed as though no opposition could live against George Murgatroyd. Nothing like his first serve, the fast one, had ever been seen at Wambledon. It astounded all beholders, dismayed all adversaries. And then, little by little, critics arose to point out that this serve, superb though it was in conception and magnificent as a mere spectacle, has never yet succeeded in getting over the net.
-Louder and Funnier (1932) Mr. Downing was a bowler with a style of his own. He took two short steps, two long steps, gave a jump, took three more short steps, and ended with a combination of step and jump, during which the ball emerged from behind his back and started on its slow career to the wicket. The whole business had some of the dignity of the old fashioned minuet, subtly blended with the careless vigour of the cake-walk. The ball, when delivered was billed to break from leg, but the programme was subject to alterations.
