AUTHOR PROFILE
Sir P.G. Wodehouse (1881 - 1975) Pelham Grenville Wodehouse, was born on October 15, 1881, in Guildford, Surrey, England.
Wodehouse received his education at Dulwich College, where he was a member of the school cricket team, He also practised boxing there. In this period he met the people who would serve as the main characters of his many books later. Then he worked for two years for the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank, but he left to earn his living as a journalist and storywriter.
At 21, (1902), he started writing in the 'By the Way' column in the old Globe. Also he kept on sending his freelance stories and contributed a series of school stories to a magazine for boys, the Captain, (in one of which Psmith made his first appearance).
At the age of 28, not a long time before First World War, (1909), he went to America, (that was his second visit; his first had been in 1904) where he continued to write short stories and also critical reports for papers as theatre critic. He made a serial for the Saturday Evening Post, (and for the next twenty-five years almost all his books make its first appearance in this magazine).
At that time Wodehouse met people close to musicals circles, and wrote lyrics and took part in the creation of musical shows. At the same time he did not abandon writing and wrote Psmith, Journalist (1912), Piccadilly Jim (1918). During the next few years Wodehouse travelled with his shows and chose France as his country of residence - France. In 1939 for services to the English language he received a doctor's degree from Oxford University.

(quoted in the New York Mirror, 27th May 1955) There is only one cure for gray hair. It was invented by a Frenchman. It is called the guillotine. The fascination of shooting as a sport depends almost wholly on whether you are at the right or wrong end of the gun. I always advise people never to give advice. Email this page of P. G. P. G. Wodehouse
I made this page to tell you about my connection to the master of humor who has accompanied my life since I was ten. Ezen az oldalon elmesélem kapcsolatomat a humor nagymesterével, aki tízéves korom óta kíséri az életemet. It all began in the summer of 1957, when I borrowed a book from a young girl who lived a block away. I still have those two small volumes; I never gave them back to her. It seemed imperative that I keep that novel for the future which is now my past and present. The book was the second Hungarian edition of Leave it to Psmith A történet 1957 nyarán kezdõdött, amikor kölcsönkértem egy könyvet egy közelben lakó lánytól. The first edition was published before World War 2, translated by Guthi Erzsébet, a remarkable woman. (Her son, Devecseri Gábor became a poet and a translator of ancient Greek and Latin literature, and, "coincidentally", her grandson was my schoolmate in elementary school.) Later I managed to obtain a copy of the first edition of her translation.

«Aha, J. B.», sagte Joss fidel.
Des Meisters Lieblingsroman - erstmals auf deutsch: Very funny, very british
