John Wheeler and Elizabeth Longworth were married 20 October 1768 in Newark, New Jersey. John Wheeler, son of Ephraim Wheeler and his wife Mary Foster, was born 12 April 1747 near Newark, NJ. In 1776 he was Surgeon of a volunteer company in the Revolutionary War and was present at the battle of Quebec. He received in 1786 a "Memorial" in New Brunswick, Canada for losses (farm, small vessel, horse, cow, etc.) substained by his family because of their loyalty to the crown. They raised their family in St Johns, New Brunswick. But in 1807 he removed to Murfreesboro, NC where most of his children had settled and bought a "plantation" which he called "Wheelersville" about four miles out "lying in the land of Kirby Creek below Watson's Mill. . . . This old home is now over a mile from any public road. But in olden times it was on the colonial road leading through Northampton and across the Ramsay Farm to the old town of Princeton on the Meherrin River."

Most of these portraits had hung at Mulberry Grove the home of the Cottens and Dr Godwin Cotten Moore. They were brought to Maple Lawn after Uncle Will's family moved to Washington D C. Dr Godwin Cotten Moore Julia M Wheeler (Mrs. G C Moore) 1814-1887 Family tradition says that Julia's portrait left was painted by her sister in law Ellen Wheeler the daughter of Thomas Sulley. Uncle Jule said when looking at his mother's portrait at Maple Lawn "Mother had a long neck, but it was not that long" (photo by Cathy L Spruill.)
The painting on right is on wood and Aunt Bessie Pierce who was given it, gave it to her son John Wheeler Pierce.

IVEY'S CHAPEL CEMETERY
On August 15, 1999, my sister, Lacretia Cooke Edwards, and my friend, Carol Kincaid, helped me to record all of the graves at this beautiful chapel. My Great Grandmother, Martha J. Massey Cooke, my Aunt Mary Ivey and three of my uncles, Henry Trawick Ivey, Cecil Cooke, and Little Wilbur Allen Cooke. Little W. A., as he was called, died of pneumonia after a house worker accidentally laid him on a hot wood stove after his bath. He was the first born of Wilbur and Pearl Clinton Cooke. I love this cemetery.
