If you wish to listen to "Bye Bye Blackbird"; press the button. Robert Millwee has so generously typed and emailed me the information on Horatio Cemetery book. So please email Robert and tell him Thank You. I have also been given permission to post the information by the publisher/author but would not like his name or address given. The cemetery association member you may contact is Carl Stinnett, PO Box 8, Horatio, Ar. 71842. But if you contact either please mention for them to give the author a Thank You. However if you find an error please contact me as directed above. The cemetery is located on the east side of the town of Horatio, Arkansas. The entrance is at the southeast corner of the cemetery, just off the curve in State Highway 41. The cemetery was originated about 1895 on three acres of land along the west side of old Highway 41 believed to have been donated by the S. H. Nunneley Family. They buried their infant son, Fred B. Nunneley, there in November 1895. The oldest marked grave is that of Fannie Bassett, wife of T. E. Bassett, who died May 6, 1895. In 1935, Henry Clay Pride was buied just west of the original three acres, and the west fence was moved fifty feet onto Pride land and was donated to the cemetery.

MIDWAY CEMETERY, COLEMAN COUNTY, TEXAS To reach the Midway Cemetery go south on the dirt road from Goldsboro taking a left on the first dirt road for 1.7 miles, then a right for .6 miles, then a left for 1.3 miles. In 1890, four acres of land were bought from M. M. Givens by trustees Bryant Porch, R. P. Wright, and A. S. Coughran. Even though this tract was referred to as the "Post Oak Grave Yard," we believe this was the Midway Cemetery (Coleman County deeds - Volume 31, page 71). It is a well-kept cemetery with a modern chain link fence, with a gate on the west side. Only the north half is in use at this time. There are a number of metal and wood stakes marking lots. There are roads running between every few rows for access. Roads have not been indicated, nor have family lot curbings. The markers were read in a snake fashion, beginning at the southwest corner of the north half. Some family lots were separated in reading by rows.

Corrections and/or additions to the original publication are printed in red. The cemetery is located on the north side of US 20 between SR 511 and Gifford Rd. The township was organized in 1835, and in 1837 a meeting was called for the purpose of establishing a cemetery. The trustees then purchased an acre of land from Thomas sigsworth. This land was fenced and lotted off, one lot being assigned to each resident of the township who was the head of a family. The first death was that of Minerva Waugh, wife of Gideon, in 1833. Resurrection Cemetery - Shorewood, Minnesota city of Shorewood, Hennepin County, Minnesota: T117N - R23W, section 36 This cemetery is kept up and in good shape. The earlier burials in this cemetery appear to have occurred in the 1920’s. As I walked the rows it appeared that the size of the burial plots had changed over time. All in all the rows line up well, however they do appear to jog in the center of the cemetery. The cemetery is located near the intersection of Highway 7 and Old Market Road in Shorewood. The cemetery is surrounded by trees and is not visible from Highway 7. As you enter the cemetery there is a dedication plaque that reads: Resurrection Cemetery - Church of Saint John the Baptist - Excelsior - This Cemetery Entrance and Gateway Was Donated in Memory of Timothy R. Pleasant Point Cemetery
    Johnson County, Texas
Although this cemetery is located in Johnson County, it has links to Mansfield through the early settlers. The land for the original Pleasant Point cemetery was given by Elizabeth Ann Anderson. The earliest recorded burial was Matilda Bell Hampton (1867 - 1870). The cemetery is located south of Lillian off Farm Road 917. Among the prominent settlers of this community buried here are members of the Casstevens, Ball, Angel, Anderson, Gidley, Goode, Smith, Shaw, and Withers families. Many of their descendants still live in the Mansfield area. A project of the Mansfield Historical Society P.O. Box 304, Mansfield, TX 76063, first published 1986. Used with permission. A. http://www.richard.clark32.btinternet.co.uk/hangmen.html
The English hangmen from 1850 to 1964 The post of hangman became much sought after in the mid 19 th century and remained so until capital punishment ceased in 1964 with large numbers of applicants (including women) for each vacancy. It would probably attract just as many applicants today if capital punishment were to be reintroduced. Swaziland had more than 50 applications for the post in 1998 from people from all over the world. When William Calcraft retired it ceased to be a salaried position and in fact fees barely increased at all from the 1870's to the 1960's. It is therefore reasonable to suppose that most of those who held the post of executioner did it not for financial gain but for other, more personal, reasons.
George Smith from Dudley in the Midlands 1805 - 1874.
    Period in office - 1849 - 1873.
Smith hanged the famous Rugeley poisoner Dr William Palmer at Stafford prison on the 14th of June 1856 for the murder of John Parsons Cook. Dr. Palmer was suspected of having committed other murders. Smith was to hang a further 14 men and one woman at Stafford, the last in August 1872. He assisted Calcraft at the first private hanging (of Thomas Wells see below) in August of 1868. He was renowned for his long white coat and tall hat which he wore at public hangings. Smith's son, also George, assisted at 3 executions at Stafford prison. Initially it is said that he was hired by the Under Sheriff of Staffordshire to save money over bringing Calcraft up from London. With the advent of a good rail network, Smith, like Askern and Calcraft could operate much further afield in later years.
