As a novelist Woolf's primary concern was to represent the flow of ordinary experience. Her emphasis was not on plot or characterization but on a character's consciousness, his thoughts and feelings, which she brilliantly illuminated by the stream of consciousness technique. She did not limit herself to one consciousness, however, but slipped from mind to mind, particularly in The Waves, probably her most experimental novel. Her prose style is poetic, heavily symbolic, and filled with superb visual images. Woolf's early works, The Voyage Out (1915) and Night and Day (1919), were traditional in method, but she became increasingly innovative in

88. Virginia Woolf
Virginia Woolf (1882 1941).
http://www.theblurb.com.au/Issue26/VirginiaWoolf.htm
Virginia Woolf (1882 - 1941) The lighthouse The circumstances surrounding Virginia Woolf's death have tended to overshadow her life and work as a writer and thinker. The way a public figure dies too often influences the way we perceive his or her life. A tragic death can become a tragic life. Virginia Woolf's life, however, was not one of tragedy; it was one of courage. Born Adeline Virginia Stephen on 25 January 1882, Virginia was one of the four children born to Leslie Stephen and Julia Jackson Stephen (both from an upper-middle class background). She grew up in a large house in Kensington, London, along with the four older children from her mother's first marriage. Virginia's life in the family home was not a happy one. From the age of six she was sexually abused by both her half brothers, Gerald and George. Further compounding this trauma was the death of her mother (when she was thirteen) after which she suffered her first mental breakdown. She took solace from her sisters and brother, Thoby, and throughout her life remained very close to her sister Vanessa. Much insight into Virginia's life is to be gleaned from her letters to Vanessa. Showing a keen intellect from an early age, Virginia was allowed unlimited access to her father's library. He encouraged her education, listening to the stories she told him every night and reading her essays. Unfortunately he never allowed her the university education that was afforded her brothers, such was the hypocrisy of the day.
