Charlotte Mary Yonge
English novelist Yonge was born in Otterbourne near Winchester, and was to live in the same parish for the rest of her life. She belonged to a gentrified family and it was her father who saw to her education, being a churchman and magistrate. Her life was dominated by the Anglican church. From the age of seven to seventy-eight, Yonge taught at Sunday school. In 1835, her path crossed with John Keble, an important figure in high Anglicanism and founder of the Oxford Movement. He urged Charlotte, who was already writing, to use her fiction to promote religious causes and edited the manuscript of her first novel, 'Abbey Church' (1844). Yonge remained unmarried, and left England only once for a brief trip to Normandy. By the time of her death she had written over 150 books. Her novel 'Abbey Church, or Self Control and Self Conceit' was Yonge's first attempt to promote high Anglicanism. Its plot concerns the consecration of a parish church, an event which Yonge had recently herself witnessed. 'The Heir of Redclyffe' (1853) was one of the century's bestsellers. Its wild romantic hero tames his passionate nature into the virtuous practice of Christian duty and dies in poverty but with goodwill towards mankind. Yonge thus offered a successful, readable literary treatment of the concept of self-sacrifice. The book is said to have influenced William Morris and was admired by Dante Rossetti. Profits from the novel were used to fund a missionary church in New Zealand.

Back to Contents Sallyo Home CHAPTER 10. THE BOOKS THEY READ. Of all things a reader can share with fictitious characters, perhaps the most satisfying is reading matter. If you come across a Marlow enjoying a book you have enjoyed there is an immediate sense of identity. It is even more satisfying to pick up throwaway references to other books or characters and recognise the source. The kinship of recognising literary allusions is not for everyone - which of course increases the enjoyment. As discussed in chapter 6, Antonia Forest is more inclined to drop hints than predigested gobbets of information. "Run and find out", says Miss Cromwell habitually and in effect her creator says the same thing with her tantalising references to books largely unfamiliar to children of the nineties. Thus she risks bewildering most of her readers much of the time. Some will not stand for being bewildered, but then the Marlow books never have been intended for lazy readers. The more adventurers, prepared to take a few things on trust, are rewarded by that occasional flash of understanding when, for example, they come across an early Naomi Michison novel and realise that is The Conquered that haunts Nicola when she is hauled off to hospital in The Cricket Term Unlike Jean Ure, whose Midge in

Yonge, Charlotte Mary , English novelist. Her writing as well as her life was restricted by the rigid High Church tenets of her upbringing. In spite of their religiosity her books were long popular because of the excellence of their characterization and dialogue.
