Mon père était ingénieur et réalisa quelques grands travaux de canalisation dans la région d'Aix, près de Marseille, où il mourut en 1847. J'ai grandi en Provence de l'âge de 3 ans jusqu'à l'âge de 18 ans et j'ai commencé mes études au collège de la ville d'Aix. Revenu à Paris en 1858, j'ai connu une période de grande misère. J'ai terminé mes études secondaires au lycée Saint-Louis et passé quelques temps à fainéanter avec l'insouciance d'un poète. En 1862, je suis rentré à la Librairie Hachette, jusqu'en 1866, époque où je me suis lancé dans le journalisme. Il y a déjà dix ans que je vis de ma plume, plutôt mal que bien. On me conteste violemment, on ne me reconnaît souvent pas le moindre talent et je gagne bien entendu moins d'argent que ceux qui écrivent des feuilletons des journaux. Il y a quatre ans seulement que j'ai pu cesser tout à fait de collaborer à des journaux, où je m'attirais des désagréments par mes manières et je me suis définitivement enfermé chez moi pour écrire mes romans.
