The use of chemistry and other molecular tools to provide an understanding of biological processes has been the driving force for this department for over 100 years. Following this goal has resulted in many research advances including the discovery of the vitamins, the identification of many of these vitamins, the provision of anticoagulants, the synthesis of the first gene, and the elimination of many diseases such as rickets, blindness, goiter, infectious diseases, pellagra, anemia, and metabolic bone disorders. Most of the discoveries were made at the hands of students in the course of their graduate training in the Biochemistry Program. This program has been developed over the past 110 years to train outstanding scientists and teachers in the biochemical and related sciences. We rely on a strong faculty with broad research interests, excellent research space, strong financial support, and a tradition of research excellence to accomplish this. We are also strongly devoted to excellent teaching and training. This web site outlines the salient features of our program and effort. I sincerely hope that we personally will have the opportunity to introduce you to the study of biochemistry.

A multidisciplinary scientific forum on cellular function ‘Cellular Physiology and Biochemistry’ is a multidisciplinary scientific forum dedicated to advancing the frontiers of basic cellular research. It addresses scientists from both the physiological and biochemical disciplines as well as related fields such as molecular biology, pathophysiology, pathobiochemistry and cellular pharmacology. Original papers and invited reviews on the mechanisms of intracellular transmission, cellular metabolism, cell growth and differentiation, ion channels and carriers, and the maintenance, regulation and disturbances of cell volume are presented. Appearing bimonthly under peer review, ‘Cellular Physiology and Biochemistry’ takes an active role in the concerted international effort to unravel the mechanisms of cellular function. Invitation for Papers Only original papers written in English will be considered. Manuscripts should be sent to:

Click Here Founded only forty years ago, UCSD has advanced rapidly to become one of the premier research universities in the country ( National Research Council Top 10 Ranking Science Watch - Oct 02' ). The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry continues to play a leading role in the evolution of UCSD: our research spans the spectrum from basic research on fundamental problems to interdisciplinary efforts that define new fields of scientific inquiry. Each of the Divisions - Analytical Biochemistry Inorganic Organic and Physical - is composed of faculty members who are among the most creative and productive in their respective fields. This excellence is extended into new frontiers of science and strengthened by the interdisciplinary culture of the Department, UCSD, and the San Diego scientific community. Our faculty work closely with colleagues from the Schools of Medicine and Engineering, the San Diego Supercomputer Center, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, which are all part of the UCSD campus, together with the many neighboring research institutes and industrial laboratories located here on the Torrey Pines Mesa. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry provides both breadth and depth of research accomplishment. In combination with growing student enrollments, faculty recruitment, construction of new research facilities, and an excellent graduate program, UCSD provides an unparalleled environment of opportunity for research in the chemical sciences.

Research Highlights
Gene regulation mechanisms revealed
Transcriptional regulation of gene expression is one of the most central control points in biological systems. The Arnosti and Henry laboratories are investigating the role of the Retinoblastoma tumor suppressor protein (Rb) as a transcriptional repressor in human cells and in Drosophila. Through understanding of this and related proteins, these researchers aim to achieve a fundamental understanding of gene regulation in development and disease processes. More information on these and other groups involved in the Gene Expression in Development and Disease Focus Group is available at http://www.bch.msu.edu/GEDD
