Members of the Biochemistry Department seek to understand the processes of life at the biochemical level. Research in the Department includes studies on the molecular mechanisms and regulation of RNA and DNA synthesis, recombination, oxygen sensing and signaling, protein folding, stress signaling and response, HIV prophylaxis, neuron receptor localization and signaling mechanisms that determine the spatial directions of neuron motility. The Biochemistry Department enjoys a rich intellectual, and supportive physical environment, with ample opportunities for interaction with colleagues with a wide variety of scientific expertise. The New York University School of Medicine maintains a active graduate program through the Sackler Institute of Biomedical Sciences and the MD/PhD Physician/Scientist Training Program Department of Biochemistry

Trends in Biochemical Sciences An official publication of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Link to Latest issue Aims and Scope Trends in Biochemical Sciences (TiBS) is designed to keep its readers up-to-date and well informed about recent advances in biochemistry and molecular biology. In addition to topical reviews, which provide the main focus of each issue, TiBS provides a platform for debate and hypothesis where new ideas can be discussed. A popular section is the Protein Sequence Motif column, which publishes short reports of new motifs or sequence homologies that have been recognized in known sequences. TiBS also features letters, reviews of computer applications and techniques, historical perspectives of biochemical and molecular biology research, and book reviews. TiBS is part of the Trends journal series, now recognized as the most highly cited group of monthly review journals in the world.

Aims and Scope: Receptors and Channels
publishes papers covering all aspects of original research on receptors and ion channels and the related signalling elements (including G-proteins). These can be at the levels of molecular biology and genetics, biochemistry, physical analysis, molecular modelling, immunochemistry, molecular pharmacology and electrophysiology. The journal accepts investigations at the molecular level on distribution, function, gene mapping, regulation and development. Also within its scope are the molecular study of membrane transporters, drug design in relation to receptors and channels, and the relationships of receptor and channel activity to disease states.

If you had visited Biology4Kids you may recognize this section. We felt it was more appropriate to have the biochemistry section here on . It is one of the cross-over fields of chemistry. Biochemists have to understand both the living world and the chemical world to be the best at their jobs.
The key thing to remember is that biochemistry is the chemistry of the living world. Plants, animals, single-celled organisms... They all use the same basic chemical compounds to live their lives. Biochemistry is not about the cells or the organisms, it's about the smallest parts of those organisms, the molecules. It's also about the cycles that happen to make those compounds.

Excellent research facilities and a research-oriented faculty allow our department to offer broadly based programs of undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate study where students can acquire a thorough and diverse background in contemporary biochemistry. Although the Department of Biochemistry is relatively large, it is organized so that a student can get to know everyone. Students can, and regularly do, consult informally with any member of the Department without appointment. Our programs are focused on the individual student and are designed to develop imaginative research. Biochem.uiowa.edu
