LABRATS
One of my fondest grade school memories is of touring the Austin American-Statesman's newspaper offices and seeing Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Ben Sargent's desk (and the spot where a pre- Bloom County Berke Breathed was thrown bodily out of the building after a particularly offensive editorial cartoon). After an extremely brief (i.e. one strip) period as a cartoonist for my junior high newspaper, I quit the comic biz for a while. In college at the University of Texas, however, there were so many bizarre and amusing things which merited permanent chronicling that I just couldn't help myself. WARNING chemistry humor ahead. May cause groans or head-scratching in those fortunate enough to be outside of the field. LABRATS features the adventures of chemistry major Sid Ford, her neurotic boyfriend Chuck, her somewhat normal roommate Barbara, and dim bass player Marshall (sorry, was I being repetitive?). If you enjoy these strips, please e-mail me and let me know!

GEOLOGY SONGS
The Geologist's Come-All-Ye (a folksong) by Brenna Lorenz Come all ye lads and you will hear
About the life that we love dear, Refrain: With our diddle-air-re-oh, falling rock away, knock it down,
Fall-di-knock-a-rock-away, me laddie-oh! Geologists all bold and strong,
We are the subject of this song. We get up with the rising sun
And map until the day is done. We walk two hundred miles a day,
And study rocks along the way. We fight our way through brush and trees
And slog through bog up to our knees. When flies are thick, then we don't walk,
They carry us from rock to rock. We swing our hammers with a whack,
Take home an outcrop on our backs. Nine hundred pounds of rock or more
Is just an average daily score. If we run out of food to eat
There's always rock beneath our feet.

The Coalition to Ban Dihydrogen Monoxide has a great site. If you haven't had much chemistry or your brain is fried, this site is only amusing if you remember that dihydrogen monoxide is water.
Scientific experiments do not only have to be performed with chemicals. This site called T.W.I.N.K.I.E.S. (Tests With Inorganic Noxious Kakes In Extreme Situations), has some funny, very scientifically done, experiments performed on your favorite snack cakes and in the proper scientific method format. The experiments were done to "determine the properties of that incredible food, the Twinkie."
Lisa Boffa at Umass has compiled a few comics called Lab Rats which make fun of the trials and tribulations of chemistry undergrads. Feeling overwhelmed with labs and tests? These cartoon characters are in the same boat.
You think you know all the elements on the periodic table. Well, the heaviest element known to science was recently discovered, Administratium ! Take a look at this site, it is one of about twenty sites devoted to Admiministratium. It's an element that is found everywhere and seems to becoming more abundant.

Charming romantic comedy doesn't 'lose' chemistry, humor
by Tai Shadrick

February 03, 2003
It's easy to predict a saccharine-filled romantic comedy these days. Guy meets girl, guy and girl fall in love but don't realize it, something terrible happens to tear guy and girl away from each other, but guy and girl eventually reunite at the end. While many of these sappy stories may seem as predictable as Lara Flynn Boyle wearing a pink tutu to the Golden Globes, director Donald Petrie's new film, "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days," has a little twist that will keep audiences on their toes. Loosely based on a book of the same title by Michele Alexander and Jeannie Long, the film stars Kate Hudson ("Almost Famous") as Andie, a "How-To" columnist for "Composure," a women's magazine that could be the next "Cosmopolitan."

Sizzling Organic Chemistry Dramas!
by Brenna Lorenz
Electrophilic Addition
(A Molecular Drama) Characters : Secondary carbon (Sec) is sharing four electrons with Primary Carbon (Prim) to form a propene molecule. Along comes a hungry electrophilic Hydrogen (Hyd) who is bonded to an electron-hogging Chlorine (Chlor). Hyd : Oh, look at all those electrons on that propene!
Chlor : What's with you? Aren't my electrons good enough for you?
Hyd : (disgusted) Your electrons. That's the whole trouble with you. They're our electrons, you pig!
Prim : Hi, Hydrogen! Nice nucleus!
Chlor : You keep your electrons away from my Hydrogen's nucleus!
Hyd : (to Propene) Would you share your electrons with little old me?
Prim and Sec : Yes!
Hyd : (Shoving electron pair at Chlorine) Here! Keep your precious electrons! I'm going to bond with someone who appreciates me.
(Hydrogen grabs one of the electron pairs shared by Secondary and Primary Carbons, and after a brief struggle, Secondary lets go, leaving Hydrogen bonded to Primary.)
Sec : Help! I'm a carbocation! Someone give me some electrons, quick! (Spots Chlorine.) Hey, you've got electrons to spare. Share them with me.
