Safety is an important aspect of working in a chemical laboratory. The following rules are but a few of the items that should be stressed in all laboratory work.
1. All laboratory personnel must wear safety glasses when laboratory work is being carried out in any part of the laboratory. Prescription glasses should be worn at the time of the laboratory. Those who normally wear contact lenses are advised strongly not to wear them in the laboratory. If it is necessary to wear contact lenses in the laboratory, the student should wear safety goggles that fit snugly.
2. Loose clothing and clothing which is very flammable should not be worn to the laboratory. Laboratory coats or aprons are highly recommended, as are slacks and or jeans. Bare feet or open-toed shoes are prohibited in the laboratory regardless of whether or not laboratory work is being performed. Shorts are not to be worn to the laboratory. Long and loose hair must be tied. The laboratory instructor shall determine what constitutes loose hair.
3. In a laboratory where flammable liquids are being used in laboratory work, open flames must be confined to the appropriate hood which, in turn, must not be a storage place for flammable materials.

43. Chemistry Safety
Up Chemistry Laboratory Safety Checklist. You are required to read the followingchecklist and check each item only when you thoroughly understand it.

Chemistry Laboratory Safety Checklist
You are required to read the following checklist and check each item only when you thoroughly understand it. Ask your instructor to clarify any points you do not understand. 1. Eye protection must be worn at all times. Safety goggles are required. It is inadvisable to wear contact lenses unless absolutely necessary for eyesight correction. 2. Gloves should be used when handling toxic or corrosive chemicals. 3. Know the location and how to use the fire extinguisher, fire blanket, eyewash fountain, and safety shower for your lab. 4. Smoking, eating, drinking, or applying cosmetics are not allowed in the lab; wash hands frequently when working with chemical substances and at the end of each lab period. 5. Bare feet are not allowed in the lab. Long hair should be tied back. Special care should be taken to keep hair and beards away from flames, especially when lighting burners and taking melting points. 6. Never use an open flame in the vicinity of flammable substances. 7. Always add boiling chips before heating a liquid.

Giltner Public Schools – Chemistry Safety Introduction: Science is a hands-on learning experience no matter what level it is learned at. Therefore, we will be performing labs throughout the course of the year. I will make every attempt to ensure that the lab is as safe as possible. However, from time to time we will be working with materials that have noxious fumes or are volatile in nature. You will be expected to follow some simple rules to ensure both your safety and those of the chemistry class and the entire school. Rules of the Lab:
  • EYE PROTECTION WILL BE WORN AT ALL TIMES. Do not wear contact lenses. Be familiar with the lab procedure BEFORE entering the lab area. FOLLOW ALL DIRECTIONS. NEVER perform an unauthorized experiment. If anything other than water is spilled, contact the instructor immediately for directions on cleaning it up. When working with Bunsen burner flames, ensure that loose clothing, jewelry, or hair does not come close to the flame. Also, do not allow flammable materials to come close to the flame. NO FOOD ALLOWED DURING LABS.

Safety Rules and Guidelines for Chemistry (Adapted from Flinn Scientific’s Safety Guidelines) Link to "STUDENT SAFETY AGREEMENT PURPOSE : Chemistry is a hands-on laboratory class. You will be doing many laboratory activities this year. These will require the use of various chemicals, burners and glassware. Safety in the chemistry classroom is the top priority for you, the students, for your parents and for me. To ensure a safe chemistry classroom, I have developed a list of rules. Your agreement to abide by these guidelines and rules constitute our safety agreement. These rules must be followed at all times. A copy of the attached “ Agreement ” must be signed by both you and a parent or guardian before you can participate in the laboratory. This copy of the Safety Rules and Guidelines is to be kept in your class notebook as a constant reminder of the safety rules. GENERAL GUIDELINES: Conduct yourself in a responsible, thoughtful manner at all times in the laboratory. Follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. If you do not understand a direction or part of a procedure, ask the instructor before proceeding.
