Please send suggestions and comments to Cindy M. Lee Environmental Chemistry is the use of chemistry to understand the interactions of macroscale environmental systems. "What is environmental chemistry? This question is a little difficult to answer because environmental chemistry encompasses many different topics. It may involve a study of Freon reactions in the stratosphere or an analysis of toxic Kepone deposits in ocean sediments. It also covers the chemistry and biochemistry of volatile and soluble organometallic compounds biosynthesized by anaerobic bacteria. Environmental chemistry is the study of the sources, reactions, transport, effects, and fates of chemical species in water, soil, and air environments
- Stanley E. Manahan. 1991. Environmental Chemistry, Fifth edition. "(The) central position of aquatic chemistry in the natural sciences gives it an increasing popularity in science and engineering curricula; it also makes it a difficult topic to teach for it requires exploring some aspects of almost all sciences." - Francois M. M. Morel. 1983. Preface to Principles of Aquatic Chemistry.

Program Information
Global and Environmental Chemistry is the interdisciplinary study of environmental chemical processes and problems on global, regional, and local scales. The University of Washington (UW) offers exceptional faculty strengths in these diverse and growing fields. UW researchers are tackling many of the most pressing questions in environmental chemistry and are training a new generation of leaders in research, education, and public policy. These issues will become increasingly dominant in the future, as society struggles to cope with environmental problems.
Participating Departments
UW offers graduate degree programs in all the major disciplines that encompass Environmental Chemistry, including Chemistry, Civil and Environmental Engineering Oceanography Forest Resources Atmospheric Sciences ... Earth and Space Science , Microbiology, Biochemistry, and Physics. More than 40 scientists from 17 departments have active research interests in environmental chemistry. These span the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Ocean and Fisheries Sciences, Public Health and Community Medicine, and Forest Resources. Students who wish to specialize in environmental chemistry at UW apply to and enroll in one of the departments and schools that participate in the Global and Environmental Chemistry program.

    Environmental Chemistry
Environmental Sciences have been teached already for about 20 years in the University of Turku. At the moment the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences offers a complete curriculum in Environmental Science very much based on the model working in chemistry. This means that the students select Environmental Science program but in fact they will be students in biology, chemistry, geography or geology and also carry out their master thesis work in these departments. Already at the present a strong environmental emphasis can be selected within each of the above topics although only chemistry offers a special environmental orientation.

    Environmental Chemistry Laboratory
The Environmental Chemistry Laboratory conducts research on the fate and analysis of anthropogenic and natural compounds in the environment. The major theme of the research has been in 1) the transport and fate of chemicals in the environment, and 2) the analytical chemistry of natural and anthropogenic compounds. since 1985 the laboratory has conducted research grants and contracts totaling $964,000. Seven Ph.D. and nine M.S. students have completed their research in this laboratory. Directed by Dr. Farida Saleh , the lab has modern chromatography and spectroscopy instrumentation for analysis of organic and inorganic pollutants in air, water and soil. The laboratory examines physical and chemical processes that control the distribution of chemicals in environmental compartments. The laboratory has modern computer facilities and software programs such as MINTEQ, MEPAS, and ReOpt, GC-MS, GC , HPLC and AA. Research has been funded by the U. S. Geological Survey, Texas Advanced Technology Program, the Industrial Health Foundation, American Chrome Chemicals, Inc., local municipalities and private agricultural and chemical firms.
