Data Formats on the Internet If you are going to be moving data around the Internet, it may be useful to discuss some of the formats that you may encounter. Understanding a little about the different data formats will help you determine where you may need to use special care in transferring files. Text files If you have used different types of computers, for example a PC and a mainframe, you may be familiar with the text format of data. Text data is just text-letters, numbers, and perhaps a few special characters. There is no special formatting in a text file, such as bold faced type, margin settings, or other binary codes. Text files can be moved around the Internet quite easily. Binary files These files contain special codes which can be understood by the native computer. An executable file is an example of a binary file, as are most files generated by an application. A file created by Microsoft Excel, a spreadsheet, is an example of a binary file created by an application. When moving binary files around the network, it is important that they not be altered. When using WS_FTP to transfer files, you can specify the binary option, which assures that the file won't be altered during the transfer. Binary files cannot be sent via electronic mail unless they are encoded and then the person receiving the file must decode it. There are also other methods of converting binary data to text so that the file can be mailed. Once the file is received, it can be converted back to binary format. Rich text format (RTF) is an example of a text format that can be used to convert binary data into a format which can be moved over the network.

Recording Formats - General Information After many years the first SARA data recording format was agreed upon at the 1991 conference.
This article is intended to record the characteristics of various formats such that reviewing old
computer data will be simplified. You do not have to store your data in the current format, but if you share data with other members
you should write a translator program to put the data in the required format. If you are writing
your own logging or plotting programs, this should not be difficult. If you develop a new format,
be sure to take the time to describe the format in detail. Most formats will only handle simple drift scan type recordings, this is the equivalent of chart
recordings. More complex formats can be developed using the SARA 1991 format as a base.
The SARA1991 header on the file tells what format to expect the data that follows. The header ID
should be protected as a "key" to the format that follows.

Ocean Data Formats
Ocean data comes in many different formats, ranging from international standards to unique formats used only by a single researcher. In addition, the recent publication of some very popular application programs with their own documented formats has presented the community with new, de facto standards. The dissimilarities between these formats have been troublesome, and many have argued against their proliferation. Recently, however, a network of connectivity between several major formats, applications programs, spreadsheets, and relational-database programs has been identified ("OceanPC 2000") that may reduce these difficulties. In any event, the data manager must be well-informed about these formats, and about their (in) compatibilities with various software systems and programs. IOC has a website which describes standard ocean data formats in detail.

National Library of Medicine (NLM) XML Data Formats [Provisional description for MEDLINE XML and associated XML data formats.] From a 1999-09 Bulletin: "As part of its reinvention efforts, NLM continues to refine the format that will be used for our forthcoming data creation and maintenance system and for distribution of MEDLINE data. This new XML-based format will be used when NLM offers its leased data via ftp. The new format will be a greatly expanded and somewhat modified version of the SGML-based format currently used by publishers who submit citation and abstract data electronically to NLM for entry to see PubMed . We plan to offer the XML format via ftp in parallel with continued distribution of the data in ELHILL Unit Record Format (EURF) on tape until all licensees have had sufficient time to transition over to the new format." Gemini Data Formats and Example Data
Data formats produced by Gemini facility instruments
Data from Gemini facility instruments are stored as Multi-Extension FITS (MEF) files. The data from a single "OBSERVE" command from the Observing Tool creates one MEF file. Each MEF file consists of one Primary Header Unit (PHU) and one or more extensions that contain pixel data (see the figure below). The extensions in MEF files are indexed from [0] which is the PHU. The extension numbers ([0], [1], etc.) are shown to the left on each of the panels. The data formats for each instrument are explained in more detail on the instrument specific data format pages.
Data formats produced by current visitor instruments at Gemini
The current visitor instruments produce simple FITS files. These files consist of header information immediately followed by the pixel data, see figure below. Example data are available as the released Demo Science (DS) and System Verification (SV) data for the visitor instruments.
How to handle MEF files with IRAF
The Gemini IRAF package is written to handle the MEF files produced by the facility instruments.

The data formats for the GDSIDB are Sea Ice Grid (SIGRID, sometimes called SIGRID-1), SIGRID-2, and SIGRID-3. SIGRID-3 is under development. These formats, and related formats, are described below.
SIGRID
On sea ice charts, ice parameters are represented by symbols and accompanying numbers giving the values of the ice parameters. The symbols varied depending on what nation was compiling the chart until the 1980s, when an international standard was developed by the WMO. The WMO "egg code," which gets its name from the shape of the symbol, is now used for most sea ice charts. The U.S. National Ice Center Web site has an explanation of the egg code ) and examples of operational ice charts. SIGRID is an alphanumeric coding of ice chart information obtained by overlaying a grid on the original paper chart and encoding the ice information in each grid cell. Thompson (1981) provides a description of the proposal for SIGRID-1 (also PDF , 58 KB). The

GLOBE Claritas seismic data processing: Data Formats
Index Claritas Licensing Flexibility ... Ethernet GLOBE Claritas has modules for reading SEG-Y, SEG-B, SEG-D, SEG-2 and SEG-1 input, and for SEG-Y output. SEG-D Revision 1 and 2 input formats are supported. The READSEGY module has a range of features allowing it to read many SEG-Y variants, including options for byte-swapping, 2- and 4-byte integer and 3- and 4-byte real data samples, missing headers etc. You can also override the default byte assignments for any header word as the tape/discfile is read in. The internal Claritas data format is a modified form of SEG-Y. The data is stored as IEEE floating-point values in the native byte-ordering, plus some additions to the reel and trace headers. The Claritas extended SEG-Y files also have associated index files which contain maps of the primary and secondary keys in the file - this allows for efficient random access to any part of the file, and fast on-the-fly sorting without creating intermediate sort files. Files larger than 2Gb are supported by Claritas under Compaq/Tru64, DEC-OSF

Data formats
VIGIE uses an internal data format. All user's data will be converted into this internal data format. This conversion is automatically realized by VIGIE and is transparent to the user but the user can also define its own interface between a new data format and VIGIE internal data format. For the user who does not want to define his own interface, several interfaces using simplified data formats are provided and will be described below. The kind of interface that you are using is told to VIGIE by the description file. The use of the description file is mandatory : This is the first file that is read by VIGIE and it provides the necessary informations about the format used, the path to the different data files, the names of the variables and the extra variables that have to be computed from the known ones. Section describes the description file.
VIGIE uses two different types of interfaces :
The first class accepts ascii data generated by any type of formatted writing instruction.
The second class uses the standard IEEE 32 bits binary format (real*4 in fortran). Binary formats depend on the machine you are. However, many compilers include an option to convert their specific binary format into the standard IEEE 32 bits binary format.

      Introduction to compression
To compress something means that you have a piece of data and you decrease its size. There are different techniques who to do that and they all have advantages and disadvantges. One trick is to reduce reduntant information, meaning saving sometimes once instead of 6 times. Another one is to find out which parts of the data are not really important and just leave those away. Before you can use the data again, it must be decompressed. Using compressed data saves time, bandwidth and disc space and the Internet we know wouldn't be possible without compression. Back to Top
      Loseless compression
How can you recognize loseless compression? Very easy, you compress something and after you decompressed it again, it must be exactly the same piece of data it was before you compressed it. If only one BIT is different, it's not loseless compression. The name loseless means "no data is lost", the data is only saved more efficiently in its compressed state, but nothing of it is removed. How can this be done? The simples way is called

    60. Euromap, Background On IRS Data Formats
Background on IRS data formats. Documentation. In In principle, bothof these data formats can be applied to any product type. However
    http://www.euromap.de/doc_009.htm
Background on IRS Data Formats Documentation In general the Super Structure Format is mainly used by customers who want to perform automatic parametric orthocorrections. Most other customers prefer the Fast Format.
    • Fast Format: The " EOSAT Fast Format Rev. C " which we use consists of one ASCII header file and simple binary image files for each band. In the case of PAN this means that you will find one header file and the corresponding image file. In the case of LISS-III you will find one header file and up to 4 separate image files (one for each of the bands). The ASCII header includes all relevant information about the image size (number of pixels per line and number of lines), image location (4 corner co-ordinates and one centre co-ordinate, path, row), acquisition parameters (date, sun elevation, sun azimuth, gain settings) and some technical parameters related to the processing done by euromap (product code, etc.).
Due to the simple inner structure of the Fast Format, the binary image files can easily be ingested by virtually any image processing software. Super Structure Format: The " Super Structure Format " has a much more complex structure than the Fast Format. A typical data set in Super Structure consists of a "volume directory file" (which includes a short description of the data product and a number of pointers and corresponding descriptors), one "leader file", one or several "image data files", one "trailer file" and one concluding "null file". In addition to the parameters given in the simple header of Fast Format, the Super Structure Format contains information related to ephemeris and spacecraft attitude. The image data files (generally one for each band) are not just binary raw files, but consist of a "file descriptor record" and one "image data record" for each line of the image. The image data records encapsulate the data of one image line and consist of record sequence numbers, record types, length of the record, scan line number, band number, the image data of the scan line, and some spare bytes.
