Data Formats in Blossom Statistics
Introduction Overview of Statistical Concepts Preparing to Run Blossom Data Formats ... [SYSTAT and DIF Files] Blossom is devised to operate in local folders containing data files. (Output of statistical procedures is written to local Blossom output files). The Blossom user specifies the local folder either through target folders of shortcuts or the folder from which the Console version is executed. In the Windows version, folders may be changed via a dialog box to access data files (or Blossom submit files).
ASCII Text Files
Text files can by used by Blossom if they contain ASCII text. Unicode text files can’t be used by Blossom. ASCII text data files read by Blossom contain columns of numbers where each column is separated from the others by at least one space or a comma. Data are read in free format, thus columns need not be perfectly aligned. Each column in the data file contains values of a variable for each of the objects (or observations, events, or cases) sampled. Thus, there is a column for each variable and a row for each object. The variables represent different measurements or observations made on each object, and such information as to which group or block the observation belongs. Here is a sample data set to be used later. It contains observations on seven objects (rows) with values for each of three variables (columns). In data shown above the variable in the first column is a grouping variable indicating membership in one of two groups (values of 1 or 2). The other two variables are measured values for each of seven objects. To make this example more concrete, think of the grouping variable as indicating a burned versus an unburned site and the other two variables as the abundance of two different species. Alternatively, think of the grouping variable as indicating gender and the other two variables as measuring skull length and width.

Data formats
Measurement data (measured values, their spatial coordinates, and optionally base function values) are read from ascii table or (simplified) GeoEAS table files, from grid map files (see Appendix D ) or from Idrisi point (.vec) files. Table (or column) files are ascii files without a header, with each line holding one record, and fields on a line separated by blanks, commas or tabs. The simplified GeoEAS format is a table file with a header. The GeoEAS file header has text information on the first line; , the number of variables in the file on the second line, and variable names on lines 3 to Grid map files may have one of the following formats: Arc-Info grid (gridfloat or gridascii), Idrisi image (ascii, real binary, byte), PCRaster (all formats, [ ]), ER-Mapper, GMT, Surfer ascii. Output grid maps are written in the same format as the input (mask) map. Files in formats that use two files and assume fixed extensions (idrisi, gridfloat) should be denoted by the file base name only (omit the extension for gstat). A grid map conversion is built in gstat, see section Technical information on data and grid map formats supported is found in appendix D . Gstat has a built-in map format conversion utility (convert, Section

Mostly Data Formats
These are software packages for the storage and retrieval of data in standard formats. The software usually takes the form of a library of subroutines which are used either by another package, e.g. Matlab Ferret , etc., or in a separate (usually Fortran or C) program created by the user to retrieve or store some type of data. I've listed the most common ones used in the geosciences (at least as far as I know) below along with a final link to even more such packages. It may seem a bit strange to have so many choices for a "standard" data format, but as you'll find out when delving into them a bit more deeply, there's the beginnings of some sort of consolidation (at least amongst the netCDF, HDF, and CDF packages listed) so eventually we might have one (or at least very few) standard formats with which to work.
CGM
The C omputer G raphics M etafile is a 2D data interchange standard which allows graphical data to be stored and exchanges among graphics devices, applications and computer systems in a device-independent manner. It is a revisable, structured format that can represent vector graphics, raster graphics and text. The given URL is the NIST CGM site which contains the full CGM standard. Input data formats
    Welcome Gallery Handbook
Ploticus can read tabular ASCII data from files, commands, from the standard input, or data may be embedded in ploticus scripts. If you're using prefabs, the data parameter specifies the source (either file or standard input) of data. If you're writing scripts, proc getdata is used to read or specify plotting data; proc trailer may be used to place larger amounts of embedded plot data at the end of the script file, to get it out of the way. Since ploticus can read data on standard input, there are many possibilities for getting data for plotting. To get data out of an SQL database, use your database's command line tool to extract tabular ASCII data. Or, to get data across the internet using a URL, use a utility like Jeff Poskanzer's http_get. These examples illustrate:

Script writers can do the same thing by setting proc getdata's file attribute to stdin , or by using proc getdata's command attribute.
    Plotting from data fields
    Plotting and data display operations are done using fields. Suppose we have a data set like this: F1 2.43 0.47 "Jane Doe" PF7955 F2 2.79 0.28 "John Smith" PT2705 F3 2.62 0.37 "Ken Brown" PB2702 F4 "" "" "Bud Flippner" PX7205

The data presented in this interactive database are also available in ASCII format, suitable for importing into popular spreadsheet programs. The ASCII data for a given station and equipment type can be obtained by following the link at the bottom of each returned datase, or on floppy disk from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL, see address below) in a package including a printed version of this documentation. Also available on floppy disks (but not online!) are averages of solar radiation for each of the flat-plate and concentrating collectors for each month during the period of 1961-1990 (360 months). These data could be useful for identifying extended periods of low or high solar radiation or plotting graphs of monthly solar radiation for any of the flatplate and concentrating collectors. The primed manual includes graphs only for flat-plate collectors tilted at an angle equal to the latitude. To obtain either of these data sets on floppy disks, please contact the NREL Technical Inquiry Service at (303) 275-4099.
