6.1 Data formats GI data compared to other data In its most elemental form digital data is composed of bits : indicators that have a state of either or 1. Information can be encoded in these binary characters. The way in which this code works varies between systems. One of the most universal conventions is the organisation into sets of eight bits, called words or bytes The file is a collection of bytes that make up a logical unit of information. In describing types of file, the terms ASCII and binary are commonly encountered. ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) files adopt a convention in which each eight-bit sequence corresponds to one of a set of common characters. ASCII files are very simple and can be created using basic text editing tools like Notepad. A binary file encodes information in the bit sequence. You can only interpret the information contained in it by knowing the code for that particular file. If a file is described as binary all files are binary, but in common usage the term refers to a file that does not conform to the ASCII convention. Try this

Publishing and Interpreting Data Formats from a Visual Basic Snap-in
Snap-ins that have extensible node types must document their data formats so that other snap-ins will be able to interpret their exported data. Documentation should include both the interface methods and the format of the data.
Visual Basic® snap-ins always use MMCDataObject.GetData regardless of whether the source snap-in is written in Visual Basic or in C++. When a Visual Basic snap-in imports data from another snap-in (regardless of the source), it receives a Byte array within a Variant that must be converted into Visual Basic data types. MMCDataObject.FormatData and SnapIn.FormatData perform these conversions. See MMCDataObject for more information. A Visual Basic snap-in can also import data from itself. If it calls MMCDataObject.GetData within the same instance of itself (for example, during a drag/drop operation), it will receive the same Variant that is passed to MMCDataObject.SetData

Using Parser-Generators to Convert Legacy Data Formats to XML
Alexander Nakhimovsky  PDF version     Latest version
ABSTRACT
A parser-generator is a program which takes a formal description of a grammar (e.g. in BNF) and outputs source code for a parser which will recognise valid strings obeying that grammar and perform actions associated with grammar rules. We show how to use parser generators for transforming legacy data into XML in the context of real-life examples, somewhat simplified for readability. We also show how to improve the efficiency of this approach by manually coding the lexical-analyzer component of the system. Two open-source Java parser-generators are presented: ANTLR to represent the top-down LL(k) approach and CUP for bottom-up LALR.

1. The Legacy Data Problem
As the world of EDI lurches and stumbles towards XML, we are increasingly faced with the transitional problem of feeding legacy data into XML-based applications. In the general case, we believe this has to be done manually, by writing a program that traverses the legacy data and sends out SAX events as it does so. However, the most common cases are simpler and can be automated or partially automated using the technology called parser generators. For example, text formats representing data tables lend themselves well to this approach. Our examples include the fixed-width format, the tab-delimited format, the Comma-Separated Values (

Mapper
earth data processing and visualization system DEM ,NDVI and rivers combined to a view of Europe in July 1993
Overview:
Mapper is a visualization tool I wrote to play with GIS data I find on the internet. It can combine data from different sources and in varying formats to a single view. It is not an image processing tool but rather builds a 3dimensional model of the earth. To do something useful with it you must first get some huge files that are freely available on the internet. Sources for such data are listed on the Download Planet Earth page or can be accessed directly from Mapper.
Current features:
  • USGS 30 arc sec. digital elevation models (*.bil and *.dem files) USGS AVHRR advanced high resolution radiometry data (NDVI, visible light, thermo bands) CIA World Database II vector maps (*.cbd files) convert NIMA GEOnet web-queries (populated places and geographic features) to flat binary file and display names on the map render a shaded view from DEM data convert data in Goodes interrupted homolosine map projection to cartesian (latitude/longitude) projection to obtain a realistic, colored view

    An online demo is available.
The demo version includes full free access to all of the properties in the database for the elements on the periodic table.
Short Overview The user selects the material and property and the software will write out the data either as tabulated data, an Excel equation, a C/C++, FORTRAN, BASIC or Python function or subroutine ( screen images ). This can then be pasted into the appropriate software to generate the material data as a function of temperature. This software is especially useful for finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The data can also be written out in formats for direct input into the ABAQUS and ANSYS finite element programs. Download the demo version or see full details of the software The user can search the database for materials with properties within a user specified range and temperature. The user can also add their own materials to the database.
