Connecting a laptop to the QTP network
The graphics and reading room 2339 and 2230 have been rearranged.
  • The SGI station CERBERUS and the Mac are for visualization work. The SUN station SWHITE17 is for general work and for making backups on 8mm or 4mm tape. That station has a 100BT conenction. The PC station NTCRIM5 is for running windows applications, for using the scanner, for creating writeable CDs, for reading ZIP and LS120 disks. The second PC is for running Windows applications. There are two empty spaces on two opposite tables. These are for QTP members to connect their laptops temporarily. The port to use is any port on the Allied -Telesyn hub on the table or the faceplate labeled "2230 2C" on the wall. Configure your laptop to automatically obtain an address. The address assigned will be private IP, so you must configure proxies in your browser to reach the Internet.
REMIMDER: It is not allowed to download any material not directly related to QTP research or teaching activity using the UF network and QTP facilities.

In this rapidly changing environment, it is critical to focus on the fundamental technological aspects that enable the concept of pervasive computing. Mobil Computing: Implementing Pervasive Information and Communication Technologies is designed to address some of the business and technical challenges of pervasive computing that encompass current and emerging technology standards, infrastructures and architectures, and innovative and high impact applications of mobile technologies in virtual enterprises. The various articles examine a host of issues including: the challenges and current solutions in mobile connectivity and coordination; management infrastructures; innovative architectures for fourth generation wireless and Ad-hoc networks; error-free frequency assignments for wireless communication; cost-effective wavelength assignments in optical communication networks; data and transaction modeling in a mobile environment, and bandwidth issues and data routing in mobile Ad-hoc networks.

IBM to host Mobil Travel Guide mainframe, storage computing services
IBM has been awarded a contract by Mobil Travel Guide to provide the company with large-scale computing infrastructure on-demand over the Internet. The contract for on-demand mainframe and storage computing services is the first of its kind in the travel and transportation industry. Under terms of the five-year agreement, IBM will provide the Illinois-based travel guide service with on-demand access to Linux-based server processing, storage and networking capacity from IBM e-business hosting centers in the United States. Instead of the physical Web, database and application servers they currently rely on, Mobil Travel Guide will tap into "virtual servers" on IBM zSeries mainframes and Enterprise Storage Servers running Linux, paying only for the computing power and capacity they require. Mobil Travel Guide will use the IBM computing resources to support the expansion of a new Web-based service, Mobil Companion, which offers customized service for auto travelers. The Mobil Companion travel program targets upscale leisure auto travelers with benefits that include state of the art web-based travel planning, 24 hour enroute travel support services, upgraded services and preferred rates from hotels, restaurants and other travel service providers.
