Thorvalds startet Distribution.

Abstract
The recent growth of the Internet and the development of computer networks caused a significant increase in the demands facing distributed systems development. One of the alternative approaches trying to handle these increased demands, is the concept of mobile code and mobile computation. According to this, the code fragments of a distributed application are not statically bound to the executing computing units (i.e. computers) but can freely wander among the computers during their execution. The implementations of this more and more popular concept, however, differ very much from each other. The differences lie both in theoretical issues and in the practical language constructs. The goal of this paper is to overview the most important approaches and to compare some mobile programming systems of importance.

Advertisment: sl="1.3" Digital News: Mobil Travel Guide Chooses Utility Computing, Linux.
Mobil Travel Guide has inked a five-year deal with IBM for utility computing, or computing power on demand, over the Internet. IBM said the contract for Linux-based utility computing services is the first of its kind in the travel and transportation industry.
IBM will provide on-demand access to Linux-based server processing, storage, and networking capacity from IBM e-business hosting centers in the United States. Mobil will tap into IBM zSeries mainframes running Linux, and pay only for the computing power and capacity that gets used.
The utility model will support a new Web-based service Mobil Companion offering customized service for auto travelers. The program includes Web-based travel planning, travel support services, and preferred rates at hotels, restaurants, and other travel service providers. The Mobil service will launch later this year.
To make Linux services available on demand, IBM partitions processing, storage, and network capacity by isolating individual demand on the system and mapping resources to that demand. Customers can purchase processing power on demand based on the processing power being utilized.

Network World Outsourcing Newsletter, 10/28/02 One of the world’s simplest " outsourced services " is electricity. When users need it, they simply plug a device into a wall jack and pull as much as they need. At the end of the month, the customer pays the provider for the service on a simple, usage-based basis. IBM is trying to develop IT outsourcing services that operate much the same way. Under IBM’s " utility computing " approach, a third-party provider will offer a single service that will include all the servers and software required to enable an enterprise to run a business process. The enterprise will pay a single monthly bill for the service, which will vary according to the amount of computing resources used. It may sound far-fetched, but IBM already has taken a few steps toward delivering on its utility computing idea. Earlier this month, Big Blue signed a five-year, multimillion-dollar deal to provide " virtual services " to Exxon Mobil Travel Guide, which will use outsourced IBM facilities to run its new Web site, Mobil Companion, which lets customers pay monthly fees to plan trips online.
