Current Operating Systems Projects and OS-related research
This page contains pointers to all sorts of neat operating system projects scattered across the world-wide web. I've categorized all of the systems into all sorts of broad, inappropriate categories to make it easier to sort through. The full list is also of course available if you're a masochist. Feel free to mail corrections, additions, or various comments to me. I still have some work to do, especially on commercial operating systems and real-time operating systems. These following sub-pages were generated by a program written using the Icon Programming Language , a powerful, high-level programming language that makes it easy to manipulate strings, lists, tables, sets, and other high-level constructs. 5. Operating Systems Through Time (8-bits)
A brief history of 8bit operating systems.
http://www.armory.com/~spectre/tech.html
8-Bit Operating Systems
This was originally printed in the last issue of Link Magazine , and is reprinted here, with updates, by the author. I finally got off my duff and incorporated all the mail people have been sending me. A few more changes are yet to be made; keep that mail coming. Please do note that, as my consciousness of computer history expands, the title is becoming increasingly inaccurate. For example, I mention nothing of mainframe or minicomputer OSes (mostly due to ignorance) and so I should probably call this " Home Computer Operating Systems Through Time" even though not all of these OSes are purely home computer machines, particularly CP/M. The title is left for historical reasons, though. New changes were last made August 2001. If you have more information about these computer systems, or have info on other systems not mentioned, please mail the maintainer Back to the Computer Workshops home page Correction: The original TRS-80 Model I had a 64x16 screen, though the Model II apparently did have the 80 column one. Thanks to Ricardo Banffy for the correction. Also, I should have been a little more circumspect when I said "underpowered" certainly when the TRS-80s first emerged, when their major competition was the Commodore PET and Apple I/II, they were most certainly

Projects IRIS Chord RON ... LAB FOR COMPUTER SCIENCE We build and investigate software systems for parallel and distributed environments. We have conducted research in operating systems, networking, mobile computing, language design, compiler design, and architecture, taking a pragmatic approach: we build high-performance, reliable, and working systems.
Our most recent research focuses on very large scale distributed systems based on distributed hash tables, such as Chord . The IRIS project is a large, ongoing collaboration. See the IRIS Page for more details. In general, our research focuses on extensible and flexible system services: filesystems, networking, and languages. Click is a flexible, modular router that runs on commodity hardware. SFS , the Self-Certifying File System, creates a global, secure filesystem with a single global namespace and no centralized control. `C (tick-C) is a superset of the ANSI C language with extensions for dynamic code generation. New algorithms in the `C compiler result in fast and high-quality runtime compilation. The Prolac language aims to make network protocol implementations both readable and efficient.

  • Aegis/Exo-kernel Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Group Members: Frans Kaashoek Dawson Engler
The Aegis kernel is built around the idea of an exo-kernel . An evolution from micro-kernels, exo-kernels export a virtual machine that securely multiplexes resourses among mutually distrusting spplications. The exo-kernel philosophy tries to export as few abstractions besides the basic hardware abstractions as possible, and to implement as little policy in the kernel as possible. Like SPIN, Aegis relies on techniques such as downloading code into the kernel to make the system fast.
  • AIOS
The AIOS project is aimed toward developing a new computer operating system based on artificial intelligence.
  • Alpha Kernel Carnegie Mellon University Group Members
  • Amoeba ... Vrije Universiteit
Amoeba is a powerful micro-kernel-based system that turns a collection of workstations or single-board computers into a transparent distributed system. It has been in use in academia, industry, and government for about 5 years.
  • Angel City University of London
Angel is designed as a generic parallel and distributed operating system, although it is currently targeted towards a high-speed network of PCs. This model of computing has the dual advantage of both a cheap initial cost and also a low incremental cost. By treating a network of nodes as a single shared memory machine, using distributed virtual shared memory (DVSM) techniques, we have addressed both the needs for improved performance and provided a more portable and useful platform for our applications.

  • Aegis (developed at MIT's Parallel and Distributed OSes group) is an OS based upon the idea of an "ExoKernel" (much like the NoKernel idea behind Tunes: there is no more runtime kernel in the OS, which yields up to 10000% performance gain). • Olin Shivers' Express project at MIT developed ML/OS, an OS in ML, by combining SML/NJ with the Flux OS Kit , reusing the web server from the Fox project.
  • The Flux project at university of Utah has been developing an OS toolkit (mirrored in Australia ), now release 0.97, so anyone can make their own OS from bricks. It is also developing its own Fluke microkernel on top.

Small applications no longer provide any competitive edge because every business has them. Only "big" applications designed from the ground up to communicate with partners, customers, and suppliers provide true competitive advantage. CodeBIG, Inc. is a consulting company founded to help our customers with the architecture, planning, and development of these types of communications-aware applications using a combination of years of network programming experience and innovative technologies. About the Operating System Sucks-Rules-O-Meter This operating system quality and approval metric is based on a periodic AltaVista search for each of several operating systems, directly followed by "sucks", "rules", or "rocks". We search for all operating system names exactly as shown above, with the exceptions of Mac OS , Mac OS X, and VMS. For Mac OS, we add the search results for the incorrect but common spelling "MacOS". Because Mac OS X is sometimes abbreviated to simply "OS X", the Mac OS X search is just for "OS X" we have not found other instances of this term on the web, so we can use it without confusion. For VMS, we add the results for "OpenVMS". We do not search for any derogatory slang misspellings of any operating system name. Subscribe to the srom-announce mailing list to receive announcements about changes to this site. Sucks-Rules-O-Meter technology is used in this report for The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) (The views and conclusions contained in the document are those of the author and should not be interpreted as representing the official policies, either expressed or implied, of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency or the U.S. Government.)
