April 29, 2002 Self hosting of weblogs If you're a Radio weblogger then you're aware of the problems that Userland is having with its static server (see this brief mention ). You're probably pretty frustrated at this time because you can't post, and even if you could post, your weblog isn't accessible. Those of us who have used Blogger can empathize with you because we faced daily frustrations with problems in Blogger and server problems with Blog*Spot. Personally, I'm very glad I made my move to Movable Type, and I imagine that Jonathon is glad he's moved, also. And now I'm hearing rumors that other folks will be making the move to self-hosted weblogs sooner rather than later. If you want control over your weblog you have to decentralize not only the postings, but the tool, itself; and this means hosting your weblog publication process. However, the problem with this is that it invalidates the principle behind weblogging a personal publication system that enables the non-techie to publish content without having to fuss with the technical details.

This is a big pain in the butt, not to mention that you are using up your bandwidth limits. (yes FTP counts against your limits) I have since setup Apache on my machine as a localhost and added PHP as well. Now I don't upload anything until I know it is working correcly, upload it, final test it and done! dhdweb

The difference between a save-upload-test-fix-repeat cycle and a save-test-fix-repeat cycle adds up over a bunch of iterations. I wouldn't develop any other way. Mono includes: a compiler for the C# language, a runtime for the Common Language Infrastructure (also referred as the CLR) and a set of class libraries . The runtime can be embedded into your application. Mono has implementations of both ADO.NET and ASP.NET as part of its distribution. You can read our rationale for this project. MCS: The Ximian C# compiler
MCS is currently able to compile itself and many more C# programs (there is a test suite included that you can use). It is routinely used to compile Mono, roughly half a million lines of C# code. We are in feature completion mode right now. There are still a couple of areas that are not covered by the Mono compiler, but they are very very few at this point (security attributes), you can also browse the MCS bugs from Bugzilla. A test suite is maintained to track the progress of the compiler and various programs are routinely compiled and ran.
Slides
Slides for the Mono C# Compiler presentation at .NET ONE are available here in StarOffice format.
Obtaining MCS
The Mono C# compiler is part of the `mcs' module in the Mono CVS you can get it from our Anonymous CVS server, or you can get nightly download page
Running MCS
MCS is written in C# and uses heavily the .NET APIs. MCS runs on Linux with the Mono runtime and on Windows with both the .NET runtime and the Mono runtime.
Reporting Bugs in MCS
When you report a bug, try to provide a small test case that would show the error so we can include this as part of the Mono C# regression test suite.

http://www.cygwin.com/cygwin-ug-net/brief-history.html
Cygwin User's Guide Cygwin Overview
A brief history of the Cygwin project
The first thing done was to enhance the development tools (gcc, gdb, gas, et al) so that they could generate/interpret Win32 native object files. The next task was to port the tools to Win NT/9x. We could have done this by rewriting large portions of the source to work within the context of the Win32 API. But this would have meant spending a huge amount of time on each and every tool. Instead, we took a substantially different approach by writing a shared library (the Cygwin DLL) that adds the necessary UNIX-like functionality missing from the Win32 API (fork, spawn, signals, select, sockets, etc.). We call this new interface the Cygwin API. Once written, it was possible to build working Win32 tools using UNIX-hosted cross-compilers, linking against this library. From this point, we pursued the goal of producing native tools capable of rebuilding themselves under Windows 9x and NT (this is often called self-hosting). Since neither OS ships with standard UNIX user tools (fileutils, textutils, bash, etc...), we had to get the GNU equivalents working with the Cygwin API. Most of these tools were previously only built natively so we had to modify their configure scripts to be compatible with cross-compilation. Other than the configuration changes, very few source-level changes had to be made. Running bash with the development tools and user tools in place, Windows 9x and NT look like a flavor of UNIX from the perspective of the GNU configure mechanism. Self hosting was achieved as of the beta 17.1 release.

Self-hosting in Eclipse using PDE
Introduction
Plug-in Development Environment (or PDE) is an Eclipse plug-in designed to make Eclipse plug-in development easier and faster. Since Eclipse itself is written using Java, and Eclipse SDK includes Java Development Tools (JDT), it is possible to use Eclipse to develop new plug-ins for Eclipse. In this document, we will be referring to this bootstrapping process as self-hosting PDE provides support for self-hosting by introducing a notion of two Eclipse instances: design and run-time . Design instance is the first Eclipse SDK instance you start by executing eclipse.exe file from the Eclipse installation directory. This instance is your design environment that will host your plug-ins as projects in the workspace. Once your code compiles and is ready for testing, you will use Run-Time Workbench launcher to start another run-time Eclipse instance. This instance will not only contain plug-ins from the design instance, but also the ones you want to test. In essence, you can treat run-time Eclipse instance as a preview of how your plug-ins will behave once built and deployed in an Eclipse-based product.

Self-hosting Checklist
This document is a reference-style step-by-step checklist for Eclipse self-hosting. For more in-depth description and pictures, visit Eclipse Self-hosting Using PDE document. Some of the following steps differ depending on your style of self-hosting. If you work on your plug-ins in a standalone Eclipse product, you can use simple self-hosting method. If you keep your projects in the repository and are a member of a team, you may need to use distributed self-hosting style and binary projects. You can read more about these two styles in the self-hosting document mentioned above.
Setup
  • If you are standalone (do not use Team support and a remote repository), ensure all the external plug-ins are selected If you are distributed (use Team support and a remote repository), ensure all the external plug-ins are deselected Press 'Finish'.
  • Creating source plug-in projects
If you are standalone, the only way you can create a new project is by using the New Project wizard. If you are using Team support, you can create new projects, but also add projects from the repository.
