Today's top news. By Kathleen Ohlson
Network World, 08/20/01 Advanced speech technology has moved to the mainstream - just ask Bob DuPont of Thrifty Car Rental, who expects to save $1 million next year using voice recognition software. Voice recognition technology is gaining popularity for a couple of important reasons. First, it can save money at call centers. A recent study by AMR Research says call costs range from $1 to $10 each depending on call length and an agent's skill level. Speech recognition software can reduce that cost to as low as 20 cents per call. Second, the technology is advancing rapidly, which lets users deploy it in new wireless and business applications. In the coming months, voice technology will only get better, observers say. Industry experts and vendors expect support for VoiceXML, a specification that would enable speech-based applications and online information to become phone and voice accessible, and the infusion of speech recognition in wireless devices, such as cell phones and PDAs, to flourish.

Book Series: TEXT, SPEECH AND LANGUAGE TECHNOLOGY Volume 17
In this book we address robustness issues at the speech recognition and natural language parsing levels, with a focus on feature extraction and noise robust recognition, adaptive systems, language modeling, parsing, and natural language understanding. This book attempts to give a clear overview of the main technologies used in language and speech processing, along with an extensive bibliography to enable topics of interest to be pursued further. It also brings together speech and language technologies often considered separately.
Robustness in Language and Speech Technology serves as a valuable reference and although not intended as a formal university textbook, contains some material that can be used for a course at the graduate or undergraduate level. Contents and Contributors Kluwer Academic Publishers, Dordrecht

"The technology is not there yet for dictation to computers," said Xuedong Huang, general manager of the .Net Technologies Group at Microsoft Corp. "Based on historical extrapolation we will have it in about 10 years." Microsoft launched a speech initiative based on its .Net platform at the SpeechTek 2002 conference here this week and announced the availability of a beta release of the .Net Speech Software Development Kit, which includes tools for creating applications using Speech Application Language Tags (Salt). The kit also supports the development of speech applications that can summon both text and graphics content on desktop PCs and Microsoft's Tablet PCs running the company's Internet Explorer browser software. "Microsoft's Salt-based technologies are designed to easily extend the Web server infrastructure to enable Web access via speech on a wide range of devices," said Kai-Fu Lee, corporate vice president of the Natural Interactive Services division at Microsoft. "We believe that Salt will enable a multitude of speech Web applications and have submitted the standard to the World Wide Web Consortium [W3C] for adoption."

    Voice Interfaces
Terminal size is decreasing, mobility is increasing, and computational elements become more and more ubiquitous in our daily life, from smart houses to Internet access via mobile phone. Instead of typing in commands we will talk to our computers and other devices. Typically future mobile terminals will be too small to accommodate a comfortable alphanumeric keyboard, relying instead on pointing devices such as a pen/touch-screen combination. We believe that a clever combination of information input and output modalities including speech is a way to overcome the usability problems imposed by the limitations of mobile terminals. Our research activities in this field comprise:
    • Multimodal spoken dialogues, e.g. "talk and tap" Spoken dialogues Design, collection and annotation of speech databases Subjective and objective evaluation of systems for speech coding, synthesis and recognition Development of demonstrators for new applications and services Design and usability evaluation of voice interfaces Organization and management of field trials Technology issues, speech recognition, speech synthesis

One of the value-added services that the China Mobile Internet Application Protocol Special Group (CMIS) is looking into is speech-recognition technology. Speech-recognition or voice-activated technology is gaining popularity in Asia because it allows companies to provide, better and faster services at lower costs. It is already used by organizations such as China's Harbin Public Information Limited, Taiwan's Yang Ming Shang Credit Cooperative Bank (Sunny Bank), Korea National Tourism Organization and Singapore Post. Along with other complementary technology and protocols, CMIS sees that speech technology will greatly facilitate the proliferation of mobile Internet applications in China as users mobile phones and devices can access Internet for informational access and commercial transactions with great ease.

What is very obvious to a human being means though use of quite complex mathematics and powerful CPUs to realize (even a shadow of) in a computer. Nowadays a normal desktop computer is powerful enough to handle continuous speech recognition in software without any special hardware (except sound capabilities of course).
