The University of Michigan Virtual Reality Laboratory (VRL) at the College of Engineering explores innovative applications of immersive and non-immersive virtual environments in a variety of areas. For industrial applications, research is focused on virtual prototyping of engineering designs - especially in the automotive and marine industry - the simulation of manufacturing processes, and related engineering tasks. Additional activities include the use of virtual reality in accident simulations, medicine, architecture, archeology, education, and other areas. As an interdisciplinary facility, the VRL collaborates with many disciplines within the university and serves the outside community. Through a combined directorship, the Laboratory cooperates closely with the Media Union 3D Lab

Virtual Reality: A Short Introduction

Terminology
Head-Mounted Display (HMD) BOOM ... Applications
Terminology
The term 'Virtual Reality' (VR) was initially coined by Jaron Lanier, founder of VPL Research (1989). Other related terms include 'Artificial Reality' (Myron Krueger, 1970s), 'Cyberspace' (William Gibson, 1984), and, more recently, 'Virtual Worlds' and 'Virtual Environments' (1990s).
Today, 'Virtual Reality' is used in a variety of ways and often in a confusing and misleading manner. Originally, the term referred to 'Immersive Virtual Reality.' In immersive VR, the user becomes fully immersed in an artificial, three-dimensional world that is completely generated by a computer.
Head-Mounted Display (HMD)
The head-mounted display (HMD) was the first device providing its wearer with an immersive experience. Evans and Sutherland demonstrated a head-mounted stereo display already in 1965. It took more then 20 years before VPL Research introduced a commercially available HMD, the famous "EyePhone" system (1989).
A head-mounted display (HMD):
Web size
(83 K)
A typical HMD houses two miniature display screens and an optical system that channels the images from the screens to the eyes, thereby, presenting a stereo view of a virtual world. A motion tracker continuously measures the position and orientation of the user's head and allows the image generating computer to adjust the scene representation to the current view. As a result, the viewer can look around and walk through the surrounding virtual environment.

... Publications Mailing List Joining Mail Archives About GeoVRML GeoVRML is an official Working Group of the Web3D Consortium. It was formed on 27 Feb 1998 with the goal of developing tools and recommended practice for the representation of geographical data using the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML). The desire is to enable geo-referenced data, such as maps and 3-D terrain models, to be viewed over the web by a user with a standard VRML plugin for their web browser. The GeoVRML Working Group has a mailing list where discussions and developments are posted. Currently, this list consists of over 200 members drawn from a wide gamut of backgrounds and nationalities, including members from industry, government, and academia; geographers, geologists, computer graphics developers, and of course interested hobbyists. The group has recently produced the GeoVRML 1.1 specification, providing a number of extensions to VRML for supporting geographic applications. There is also an accompanying Open Source Java sample implementation of these nodes. Finally, these nodes are part of Amendment 1 to the VRML97 ISO standard. Working Group Information

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
In 2003, MMVR proceeds into its second decade as the premier educational conference for computer scientists, physicians and surgeons, IT and medical device professionals, and educators to share research and expertise, and to create new tools for the art of medicine. MMVR began in 1992 to nurture interactive computer technology-virtual reality-as a means to advance patient care and physician education. Today, the conference provides an innovative forum for data acquisition, processing, and delivery methods. These, in their medical utilization, improve accuracy in diagnosis, refine therapeutic precision, and enhance medical education and procedural training. The conference features a broad spectrum of topics, including stereoscopic projection for improved understanding of medical images, surgical simulation with haptic feedback for more effective training, data networks for telemedicine, robotics to refine the surgeon's touch, sensors and data visualization to facilitate differential diagnosis, and augmented reality to extend the clinician's vision. MMVR encourages technology transfer between academic disciplines and medical specialties, and fosters the exchange of knowledge between visionaries, researchers, and commercial developers. This year's theme, "NextMed: Health Horizon" acknowledges the revolutionary healthcare potential made possible by such cross-disciplinary integration.
