Introduction
The NCSA Virtual Reality (VR) laboratory is a research facility engaged in the exploration of new methods of visualizing and interfacing with scientific data and simulations. This exploration is done in conjunction with researchers who want to investigate their science using interactive and immersive technologies. The laboratory is located in the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology on the University of Illinois campus. We also collaborate with the Electronic Visualization Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Chicago in the development of CAVE TM applications and technology (also see NCSA CAVE As part of the visualization effort at NCSA, the goal was to study, develop, and use improved methods of representating, presentating, and interacting with scientific (and other) data-sets. In 1991, the NCSA VR Lab was created to began investigating the use of Virtual Reality (VR, also refered to as Virtual Environments - VE) as a Visualization tool. The CAVE, and other VR facilities at NCSA are now managed by the NCSA Virtual Environments Group (VEG) From the beginning, we were interested in exploring the capabilities of a variety of VR devices. These devices included a VPL Head-mounted Display (HMD), a Fakespace BOOM, and a large projection display capable of stereo, and tracking. After working with the CAVE by porting one of our applications to it for its introduction in the

If you answered 'yes' to any of these questions then you need a Virtual Tour. VR Tours is your complete solution for everything virtual reality. Why limit the exposure of your property to just newspapers and a one hour inspection on the weekend. Reach a larger field of buyers by launching a Virtual Tour of your property with VR Tours A Virtual Tour saves both you and potential buyers loads of time. Buyers who are too busy to get to inspections are actively looking online for their next home. With a Virtual Tour, buyers can view your home at a time that suits both of you. Flat 2-dimensional photography is now a thing of the past, so get this latest technology working for you - and at competitive rates (cheaper than advertising in the local paper) a Virtual Tour certainly is worth investing in. Gesturing Toward the Visual: Virtual Reality, Hypertext and Embodied Feminist Criticism
In 1989, the year that virtual reality was born, MacUser magazine published an article which proclaimed that: the ultimate goal of computer technology is to make the computer disappear, that the technology should be so transparent, so invisible to the user, that for practical purposes the computer does not exist. In its perfect form, the computer and its application stand outside data content so that the user may be completely absorbed in the subject matter (qtd, Ulmer n.p.) The rhetoric surrounding virtual reality, on the other hand, argues not for the disappearance of technology, but for a disappearance of the body in favour of existence as a state of pure information. Katherine Hayles has pointed out that the body is both informational and material object (6) and that it is only "when one duality is chosen over anotherwhen the body is seen only as informationthat its erasure seems possible" (6). This elision of the body nullifies the spiritual component of ourselves and precludes any notions of psychological transcendence that should be possible in physical experiences, particularly experiences like the creative act, art and lovemaking. "[D]isembodied theorizing" (Greco) denies both consciousness and the sensory input that is integral to our navigation of the world: that being the proprioceptive sense, our physical sense of our body boundaries.

A radical scientific and evolutionary hypothesis about the origin of mind. By Jerome Iglowitz.
http://www.foothill.net/~jerryi/
I propose that mind is the biological coordinator of primitive, profoundly complex and blind metacellular process. -pure and simple!
How could this be?
The problem of the relationship between the mind and the brain is generally considered to be either:
*trivial, (obvious)
*unsolvable, or
ridiculous even to consider
-depending on the commentator. I do not think this is so. The mind exists, the brain exists, but the mind can never be more than the brain. Therefore "the mind is [exactly equals]the brain" -so say Patricia and Paul Churchland. Consciousness "emerges" from a physical substrate, (though they never say how that could possibly be). The mind plays tricks however: it invents phenomena. The "color phi" and a "Cartesian theater", (i.e. mental events), are scientifically and even logically impossible says Daniel Dennett. The "mind", (in our normal meaning), he concludes therefore, must be eliminated . It is a "figment" of the imagination -i.e. it is an illusion. And then there are those who say the problem is innately unsolvable -it is

In 1997 The Natural History Museum was a partner in an exciting virtual reality project. The Museum's part in the project was to develop ' The virtual Endeavour experiment ', an exhibition in virtual reality. One of the technologies used in the production of the virtual exhibition allowed real objects to be converted into three-dimensional datasets. A digital camera recorded the path of a narrow laser beam as it scans an object. This data is used to create the 3 D model, which can then be manuipulated on a computer screen as if it were a real object. As a demonstration of this technology, the Museum had a number of fossil specimens scanned. You can download the datasets for these fossils, and view them using virtual reality software. The fossil datasets are in Virtual Reality Modelling Language (VRML). You will need a special plug-in to view this format. Fortunately this software can be downloaded from various Internet sites.

A Conversation with Virtual Reality Pioneer Jaron Lanier, Part One
by Janice J. Heiss
January 23, 2003
Jaron Lanier Jaron Lanier is well known for his work on "virtual reality," a term he coined in the 1980s. Renowned as a composer, musician, and artist, he has taught at many university computer science departments around the country, including Yale, Dartmouth, Columbia, and Penn. He recently served as the lead scientist for the National Tele-Immersion Initiative, which is devoted, among other things, to using computers to enable people in different cities to experience the illusion that they are physically together. Currently, he is working on something he calls phenotropic computing, in which the current model of software as "protocol adherence" is replaced by "pattern recognition" as a way of connecting components of software systems. In this first of a two-part interview, we met with him to talk about his vision of the fundamental changes that are needed in software development. "I think the whole way we write and think about software is wrong. If you look at how things work right now, it's strange nobody and I mean

Version 1 Bobsled Simulator That thing in the picture is a bobsled simulator. It's kind of like a flight simulator, but simulates driving a bobsled instead of flying a plane. An IBM workstation runs code which calculates the dynamics of the sled in real time. We feed the program track data (Lillehammer, Salt Lake City, Albertville, Calgary) and driver steering input, and it solves the equations of motion and draws a picture on the screen from the driver's point of view. Data is also sent from the workstation to a motion control system which plays a CD of the sounds of a bobsled going down a real run, rolls the cockpit, and provides force feedback to the driver through the steering handles. The idea behind this project is to help train the United States Olympic Bobsled Team. With the simulator the drivers can take as many practice runs in a day as they like (as opposed to 4 or 5 runs maximum when training on ice), work on only one section of a track at a time, practice many different tracks without having to travel, compare their "lines" to other drivers, and get quantitative feedback on how they are doing after each run. There are three versions of the bobsled simulator currently in operation: one in Lake Placid, NY at the
