See more " unwrapped " panoramas QuickTime VR is a revolutionary technology pioneered by Apple Computer that allows you to interact with an image - you can look up, down, right, left, even around behind, and zoom in and out. It is the next best thing to being there. Needless to say, this is a technology with immense implications for teaching and learning about geography and environment. These images were all created from photographs of actual places. Requires QuickTime . This free software from Apple Computer, available for Macintosh or Windows, is necessary to view the panoramas. Download it before viewing. The panoramas on this site are a selection drawn from the much larger collection on The Virtual Guidebooks website. Virtual Guidebooks contains over 2200 virtual reality panoramas spanning western North America from Hawaii to Wyoming, from the Arctic Ocean to Baja California. It is extensively cross-referenced, with thematic lists (such as all panoramas of lighthouses) and searchable. The panoramas on Virtual Guidebooks are larger and more detailed than the ones here. dbain@baindigital.com

Distributed Virtual Reality An Overview
by Bernie Roehl
(First draft: June, 1995)
[This document is kept online; the URL for it is http://ece.uwaterloo.ca/~broehl/distrib.html [There is also a companion piece, describing the behavior of virtual entities, at http://ece.uwaterloo.ca/~broehl/behav.html One of the hottest topics in Virtual Reality research is the idea of "distributed" VR. A lot of ideas have been tossed around in various newsgroups and mailing lists; this document is attempt to bring together some of the more interesting concepts and organize them in a way that's easy to follow. This is very much a "living" document; I'm eager to hear what people think of it, and I'm quite willing to make changes based on that input. Feel free to get in touch with me; my email address is broehl@ece.uwaterloo.ca (if you don't hear back right away, please bear with me; I get a lot of email, and often fall behind).
What is "Distributed VR"?
The idea behind distributed VR is very simple; a simulated world runs not on one computer system, but on several. The computers are connected over a network (possibly the global Internet) and people using those computers are able to interact in real time, sharing the same virtual world. In theory, people can be sitting at home in London, Paris, New York and Edmonton, all interacting in a meaningful way in VR.

Colonizing Virtual Reality
Construction of the Discourse of Virtual Reality, 1984-1992
Chris Chesher
Introduction
New technologies do not appear from nowhere as a mystical spark of inspiration from the mind of one individual. Nor are they inevitably accepted for their self-evident benefits. A technology emerges through a process involving broader cultural, linguistic, institutional and technological contexts. One clear illustration of this process can be drawn with the appearance of "virtual reality" in 1989, and the subsequent popularization of the idea through the media. On June 7, 1989 the computer-aided design software company Autodesk and the eclectic computer company VPL announced a new technology called "virtual reality." In marketing this new technology (which represented a major shift in thinking about the nature of computers), the developers and promoters drew on a range of tropes: VR is shared and objectively present like the physical world, composable like a work of art, and as unlimited and harmless as a dream. When VR becomes widely available, around the turn of the century, it will not be seen as a medium used within physical reality, but rather as an additional reality. VR opens up a new continent of ideas and possibilities. At Texpo 89 we set foot on the shore of this continent for the first time.

PMVR is a Java TM applet that displays panoramic images in a web page. (also works great for creating panoramic CD demos) PMVR was designed as an alternative to Apple's QTVR because QTVR requires a large plug-in to be installed first. QTVR is great if users already have it installed but if not, it is a pain to wait to install the plug-in. Many users will not wait for QTVR to install and will just move on your opportunity for impressing the visitor gone forever. The advantage of PMVR is that it is a very small Java applet (33K, so it loads in just seconds) that will run in any browser that supports Java 1.1 applets, on any platform . In fact, PMVR compensates for known bugs in older Java VMs, which allows it to run in older web browsers. However, using recent browsers is always recommended due to the security and speed improvements they offer (via JIT, Just-In-Time compiler technology, which makes them several times faster). PMVR uses technology that is

Cable Television: How It Works

Cable television works by sending video signals through fiber and coaxial cable directly to television viewers, rather than by broadcasting over the airwaves. Following the technological convergence that began during the 1990s among television, computer, and telecommunication networks; cable providers began to sell access to a range of services in addition to video programming. Most notable among these services are high-speed Internet access and Internet telephony. The following essay explains how each component of a cable system works to move video content and other cable services between service providers and individual subscribers.
