CD-ROM
Interactive CD-ROMs can hold a variety of media and a massive amount of information. For example, 250,000 pages of text will fit on a single CD. Consider the possibilities: products, video clips, virtual video or 3d tours of buildings can all be integrated on a CD-ROM with a leading edge interface that puts the viewer in control. CD-ROMs from DDA can be pressed into a business card size disc or into the shape of a corporate logo, that will play on standard desktop CD-ROM drives. Interactive CD-ROMs are fast becoming the new proactive marketing tool of the new millennium. When first introduced in the mid 1990's, the CD-ROM Drive and the content developed for it seemed to be limited to high end game development, content developers (i.e. encyclopedias and stock images for rent or purchase) and software delivery. The interactive advertising and presentation started to develop, but had limited success early on because of the cost of development and the small number of service providers. Just when it seemed that CD-ROM development might go mass-market (1997-1998) another phenomenon seemed to supplant the fledgling CD-ROM industry. The Internet phenomenon became the media delivery mechanism of choice. Despite its severe bandwidth limitations, the ubiquitous nature and extreme growth of the internet overwhelmed the advertising market for CD-ROMs.

Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy
Background
Exposure Therapy
Exposure therapy involves exposing the subject to anxiety producing stimuli while allowing the anxiety to attenuate. These stimuli are generated through a variety of modalities including imaginal (subject generates stimulus via imagination) and in vivo (subject is exposed to real situations). As an example, acrophobia (the fear of heights) is characterized by marked anxiety upon exposure to heights, avoidance of heights, and interference in normal every day activities as a result of the fear. Based on an initial subjective evaluation of what types of height situations cause anxiety in a patient, a therapist using an in vivo graded exposure approach to treating acrophobia would arrange therapy sessions in which the patient goes through a process of exposure and adjustment to those situations (habituation). Patients begin with less threatening situations and gradually work their way up a hierarchy of more anxiety producing situations. For example, if the patient is afraid of heights, therapy sessions might begin by looking through a third floor window with the therapist present. In subsequent sessions the patient might move up to a window on the tenth floor. Other common locations for in vivo therapy could be outside stairways, balconies, bridges, and elevators.

Architecture/NativeAmerican Home Early Work

Since early childhood, I have been fascinated by Native American architecture. But in the place where I grew up in Shiawassee County, Michigan , I can not remember ever seeing a single artifact of the original Chippewa Indian buildings or places they builtso transformative was the modern farming to Michigan's Lower Peninsula! Still, I used to wander the forests and fields near Durand in search of some evidence that the Chippewa had been there. The school library was no helponly one book on architecture titled, "The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World".
In northern New Mexico I was astonished to see so many architectural ruins of the prehistoric Indians still evident in the landscape. Seeing the ruins of these splendid buildings and villages was like seeing for the first time the cultural landscape of a continent. As a hobby, I have been studying these buildings ever sinceat every spare moment. They have become an important inspiration to me in my architecture practice here in the Southwest US.

A view of a typical VRA online meeting
What is VRA? The Virtual Reality Association Incorporated is a non-profit International Association dedicated to furthering the art and science of Virtual Reality (VR) through community involvement. In 1994 Danny Stefanic saw the need for enthusiasts and experts to have a common meeting point to connect, exchange knowledge, and help promote Virtual Reality. This became the Virtual Reality Association. We have held monthly meetings ever since, and have been involved in some cool projects. The VRA is run by volunteers (read: VR fanatics) who are knowledgeable in various areas of building and using virtual reality.

  • Keystroke: CONTROL-RIGHTARROW Torsion of a curve is usually taught via formulas involving the cross-product of the velocity and acceleration vectors. With a CAS animation, we may watch a point travel along a curve, and view the length of the binormal change, coupled with the twisting of the TNB frame. With a VR animation, we may actually ride along the curve and experience the torsion. Of course the formulas are required for mathematical analysis, but what are the benefits for students in experiencing the changes in torsion? Does this effect the way we teach TNB analysis?
How Will Virtual Reality Change Vector Calculus?
One goal of this book is to address this question, via exploring many of the topics of three-dimensional calculus using the power of virtual reality a la VRML. Until recently, all of multivariable/vector calculus was taught algebraically. Now many courses utilize computers via computer algebra systems and graphing tools to visually investigate the geometry of curves and surfaces in 3-space. Virtual Reality/VRML holds many possibilities for extending the visual investigation experience. The incorporation of CAS's forced many changes in the curriculum for 3D calculus over the last five years; we ask: how will VR change it in the next five years?
