ABSTRACT
The difference between content management systems and document management systems (which most content management systems are) lies in the appropriate use of XML related standards. We present how applying standards will enhance the value of your content. Content Management is a field of expertise that grew to maturity many years ago. Currently available content management systems usually only manage documents and their workflow. They should therefore be categorised as document management systems, which lack the content manipulation possibilities offered by true content management systems. With the help of XML true content management solutions can be developed. This will allow for content manipulation at content level (opposed to document level), which enables a more advanced approach to personalisation, and will also enhance the user experience. Generally speaking, the overall value of content will be much higher because of the far more effective use of it. The entire family of XML related standards offers sufficient support to create such a true content management system. The XML content management framework demonstrates which standards should be applied where, and will also prove to be valuable when selecting from existing tools.

"the e-Business framework" XML (eXtensible Markup Language) is a simplified subset of the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML, ISO 8879) which provides a file format for representing data, a schema for describing data structure, and a mechanism for extending and annotating HTML with semantic information.
EDI
(Electronic Data Interchange) works by providing a collection of standard message formats and element dictionary in a simple way for businesses to exchange data via any electronic messaging service.
XML/EDI
provides a standard framework to exchange different types of data for example, an invoice, healthcare claim, project status so that the information be it in a transaction, exchanged via an Application Program Interface (API), web automation, database portal, catalog, a workflow document or message can be searched, decoded, manipulated, and displayed consistently and correctly by first implementing EDI dictionaries and extending our vocabulary via on-line repositories to include our business language, rules and objects. Thus by combining XML and EDI we create a new powerful paradigm different from XML or EDI!

He recently decided enough was enough and created an ASP class to handle things. In addition to being more flexible then the original functions, the class offers additional functionality to boot.

XML: Extensible Markup Language
Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a human-readable, machine-understandable, general syntax for describing hierarchical data, applicable to a wide range of applications (databases, e-commerce, Java, web development, searching, etc.). Custom tags enable the definition, transmission, validation, and interpretation of data between applications and between organizations. XML, Java, and the future of the Web
    Jon Bosak, Sun Microsystems
    Last revised 1997.03.10
    Introduction
The extraordinary growth of the World Wide Web has been fueled by the ability it gives authors to easily and cheaply distribute electronic documents to an international audience. As Web documents have become larger and more complex, however, Web content providers have begun to experience the limitations of a medium that does not provide the extensibility, structure, and data checking needed for large-scale commercial publishing. The ability of Java applets to embed powerful data manipulation capabilities in Web clients makes even clearer the limitations of current methods for the transmittal of document data. To address the requirements of commercial Web publishing and enable the further expansion of Web technology into new domains of distributed document processing, the World Wide Web Consortium has developed an Extensible Markup Language (XML) for applications that require functionality beyond the current Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). This paper [0] describes the XML effort and discusses new kinds of Java-based Web applications made possible by XML.
