X ml C ompressed D ocument E ngine What is it ? The XCDE Library is a native system to compress and index XML files. It was written in C at the Computer Science Department of the University of Pisa by Paolo Ferragina and Andrea Mastroianni . The library includes an API that allows users to store, index and compress XML documents and some commands (written using the API) for implementing higher-level queries and/or for document (de)compression operations. State-of-the-art algorithms and data structures were adapted to reach good time/space performance and to support efficiently some innovative features, as the extraction of well-formed portions of XML documents ( snippets) , proximity queries on words and structural queries it comes with source Overview of the library The main characteristics of the library are the following: native : it operates at the bottom level just upon the File System. This solution allowed designers to control all the details of the implementation, using specific algorithms and data structures by which it is possible to obtain better time/space performance;

1.0 Introduction
This paper gives a high-level overview of how to use XML with databases. It describes how the differences between data-centric and document-centric documents affect their usage with databases, how XML is commonly used with relational databases, and what native XML databases are and when to use them.
2.0 Is XML a Database?
Before we start talking about XML and databases, we need to answer a question that occurs to many people: "Is XML a database?" An XML document is a database only in the strictest sense of the term. That is, it is a collection of data. In many ways, this makes it no different from any other file after all, all files contain data of some sort. As a "database" format, XML has some advantages. For example, it is self-describing (the markup describes the structure and type names of the data, although not the semantics), it is portable (Unicode), and it can describe data in tree or graph structures. It also has some disadvantages. For example, it is verbose and access to the data is slow due to parsing and text conversion. A more useful question to ask is whether XML and its surrounding technologies constitute a "database" in the looser sense of the term that is, a database management system (DBMS). The answer to this question is, "Sort of." On the plus side, XML provides many of the things found in databases: storage (XML documents), schemas (DTDs, XML schema languages), query languages (XQuery, XPath, XQL, XML-QL, QUILT, etc.), programming interfaces (SAX, DOM, JDOM), and so on. On the minus side, it lacks many of the things found in real databases: efficient storage, indexes, security, transactions and data integrity, multi-user access, triggers, queries across multiple documents, and so on.

1.0 Introduction
In this Web page, I have tried to capture the current state of the market for XML database products. These are gathered from Web sites, product reviews, XML webzines, XML resource guides, and email from product users and developers.
1.1 XML and Databases
Although complete description of how to use XML with databases is beyond the scope of this page (see instead " XML and Databases "), a brief review will help you choose what product is right for you. XML documents fall into two broad categories: data-centric and document-centric . Data-centric documents are those where XML is used as a data transport. They include sales orders, patient records, and scientific data. Their physical structure the order of sibling elements, whether data is stored in attributes or PCDATA-only elements, whether entities are used is often unimportant. A special case of data-centric documents is dynamic Web pages, such as online catalogs and address lists, which are constructed from known, regular sets of data. Document-centric documents are those in which XML is used for its SGML-like capabilities, such as in user's manuals, static Web pages, and marketing brochures. They are characterized by irregular structure and mixed content and their physical structure is important. To store and retrieve the data in data-centric documents, what kind of software you need will depend on how well structured your data is. For highly structured data, such as the white pages in a telephone book, you will need an XML-enabled database that is tuned for data storage, such as a relational or object-oriented database, and some sort of data transfer software. This may be built in to the database (in which case the database is said to be

Give people a few hints, and they can figure out the rest. They can look at this page, see some large type followed by blocks of small type and know that they are looking at the start of a magazine article. They can look at a list of groceries and see shopping instructions. They can look at some rows of numbers and understand the state of their bank account. Computers, of course, are not that smart; they need to be told exactly what things are, how they are related and how to deal with them. Extensible Markup Language (XML for short) is a new language designed to do just that, to make information self-describing. This simple-sounding change in how computers communicate has the potential to extend the Internet beyond information delivery to many other kinds of human activity. Indeed, since XML was completed in early 1998 by the World Wide Web Consortium (usually called the W3C), the standard has spread like wildfire through science and into industries ranging from manufacturing to medicine.

What is it?
The XHTML family is a reformulation of HTML 4 in XML. It represents the next step in the evolution of the Internet. It lets you enter the XML world, creating content that is both backward and future compatible. XHTML became an official W3C recommendation on January 26, so when you read this you are on the cutting edge of it all.
Why all this? What is the problem with good old HTML?
We explored the shortcomings of HTML a while ago, in a nutshell:
  • HTML has a fixed set of elements, so it is not easily extended to different needs HTML was designed with the PC in mind, not taking into account the multitude of alternative platforms coming to the Web, like TVs, mobile phones and digital tablets. HTML is defined relatively sloppily, requiring parsers to be quite forgiving and intelligent in fixing problematic markup on the fly. This intelligence weighs in heavy on your hard disk with your favorite browser.
