    Admission
In general, students entering the D.Env. program should have received a master's degree in some field of the sciences or engineering. Generalist master's degrees in such areas as environmental sciences or public health and master's degrees in the social sciences, or medical degrees may be accepted for admission if the applicant presents a record with appropriate courses in the sciences and mathematics and other special qualifications such as research experience. Before being accepted unconditionally into the program, all students must have taken the following courses, which are considered preparation for the program: (1) biology one year of introductory biology with laboratory; (2) chemistry one year of general chemistry with laboratory, including analytical methods, and one quarter of organic chemistry, no laboratory required; (3) geology one course in introductory geology with laboratory; (4) mathematics one year of calculus plus one course in elementary statistics; (5) physics one year of introductory physics with laboratory. Any of these courses may be taken after the student has arrived at UCLA.

SIDS Not Linked to Number and Variety of Childhood Vaccines
Mar. 12 The available scientific evidence does not support a causal link between sudden infant death syndrome and exposure to the diphtheria, tetanus and whole-cell pertussis vaccine or to multiple childhood vaccines, says a new Institute of Medicine report. Only an older diphtheria-pertussis vaccine, no longer used in the United States, is causally related to a rare and fatal inflammatory reaction in infants. These and other findings about links between childhood vaccines and SIDS or other types of sudden unexpected death in infancy do not warrant a review of the childhood vaccination schedule.

    http://www.sph.unc.edu/envr
The scholarly focus of the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering is the interplay between humankind and the physical, chemical, and biological processes, and other species that regulate the function of both natural and engineered environments. We describe environmental processes to understand their effects upon humankind and consider the reciprocal effects of human activities on these processes. The overall goal of our inquiry is the development of explanatory and predictive capacities for assessing and mitigating consequences to human health or the environment through alternative societal actions and policies. Environmental Leaders in the Making
UCLA's innovative Environmental Science and Engineering Program provides practical education for tomorrow's environmental problem solvers. Traditional discipline-based education does not provide students with the skills and insight to solve complex environmental problems. Today's environmental professionals need scientific, engineering, and policy skills to translate our collective resolve and resources into effective environmental action. Such environmental professionals are at the cutting edge of efforts to safeguard the environment. The Environmental Science and Engineering Program trains environmental scientists, engineers and policy makers in a more interdisciplinary manner than is afforded by traditional Ph.D. programs. Graduates who have earned the Doctorate in Environmental Science and Engineering now occupy positions of leadership in government agencies, the private sector, the national laboratories, and public interest groups.
