ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE Research in environmental science, led by Professor Peter Aspinall, is concerned with visual impairment and its effects on building and healthcare issues including lighting design and wayfinding. Physical and numerical modelling of airflow within, and wind flow around, buildings is concerned with environmental comfort. Energy use, sustainability and 'green' issues in building are also investigated. Our facilities include a rotating house, a large boundary layer wind tunnel and equipment for measurement of thermal transmission both in the lab and under field conditions.

Course Work
ESE students take courses in environmental science, engineering, and policy, law and management. All students take courses in air pollution, water quality, applied ecology, environmental toxicology, engineering hydrology, water quality control systems, environmental policy, and environmental law. In addition, students take 7-8 breadth courses chosen from the wide variety of environmental courses offered by UCLA departments such as Atmospheric Sciences, Biology, Chemical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Economics, Environmental Health Sciences, Geography, Policy Studies, Law and Urban Planning (see table). Students typically devote full time to coursework during their first year, taking 12 courses, and finish their coursework the second year. ESE) Program focuses on the critical environmental questions of emphasizes the interactionsand interdependencies between science, engineering, public policy
http://www.ph.ucla.edu/ese/general/general.html
"The multidisciplinary and applied nature of the ESE program teaches students to understand and analyze environmental issues from a technical level, and to apply the results of the analysis to real-world situations in order to address some of the most pressing environmental issues facing society today." Eric Stein, ESE Alumni
General Information
The Environmental Science and Engineering (ESE) Program focuses on the critical environmental questions of the day: problems that transcend state and national borders, yet also have local relevance. ESE Program research and training activities are both experimental and analytical in nature, often involving laboratory or field studies but also modeling and policy analysis.
Both the research and instruction recognize the interconnections between soil, air, water and biota, as well as the interdependence of human and ecological health. Equally important, the Program emphasizes the interactions and interdependencies between science, engineering, public policy economics and law in the protection of the environment and public health.
Although housed in the School of Public Health, the ESE Program is an interdepartmental program involving twelve academic departments in the Schools of Engineering, Public Health, Public Policy and Law, as well as in the College of letters and Sciences.

Environmental Science, an option of the Associate of Science degree program in Science and Mathematics, prepares students for transfer into a bachelor's degree program in Environmental Science. The program provides a comprehensive understanding of the functions of local and global ecosystems and examines how they are affected by human activities. Students consider scientific evidence which shows that human activities threaten many ecosystems and they critically study alternatives to present practices. The Environmental Science program trains students to examine the impact of humans on the environment from sociological, political, and economic viewpoints. Students are able to:
  • apply concepts and implement the skills learned in the sciences, mathematics and humanities to real world environmental issues demonstrate skills in literature research, debate and discussion, oral presentation, and scientific techniques and methodology demonstrate awareness of local environmental problems and efforts demonstrate awareness of specialization, career and employment opportunities in the field of Environmental Science

Europa's Ocean, Revisited
Theoretical, geological, and spectroscopic arguments have lead many planetary scientists to predict the existence of an extensive subsurface ocean under the icy crust of Europa, Jupiter's fourth largest satellite, but direct evidence has been lacking. A recent report by Kivelson, et. al. in Science provides the best evidence so far. Magnetometer measurements by the spacecraft Galileo reveal a conducting layer with properties similar to the Earth's oceans below the Europan surface. The left-hand image above is from NASA's Galileo web site, which has a wealth of information and images of Europa and other Jovian moons. The right-hand image is a possible model of the Europan oceanic processes, from a summary article by Stevenson in the same issue of Science (D. Stevenson, Science , 25 August 2000, pp. 1305-7) The images at the top of the Department's home page are changed at irregular intervals. If you wish to see previous images, please click

Program Director: Charles A. Dana Professor David S. Westerman, westy@norwich.edu Nearly all incoming Environmental Science majors will start with the development of a firm science and mathematics base in their first two semesters. Those who enter having already selected either chemistry or physics as their concentration will be advised to modify the sequence of courses in their first year as described below.
Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science
First Year
Fall Semester Credits Spring Semester Credits Precalculus Math* Applied Calculus* Principles of Biology Principles of Biology II Environmental Geology Oceanography *Or equivalent; EG and PS students take MA107 and MA121; may be fulfilled with EG112 or MA202. To build on this base, each student selects an academic area of concentration by the end of his or her first year, and it is that choice of concentration that determines which of two curriculum tracks the student will then follow. Both tracks culminate with the capstone, field-oriented final project and a seminar.
Sequence of Courses
Concentration in Science or Engineering
Students electing their concentration (minor) in one of the sciences (biology, chemistry, geology, or physics) or in engineering will share a common curriculum as upperclassmen that draws heavily from the science, and graduates of this track will have broad interdisciplinary training with a strong science background. Their strength will be in this breadth as well as in the specific discipline in which they concentrate their studies.

    Graduate Degrees Offered
The Science and Public Policy Program is not a degree-granting unit. Students working for the Program are enrolled in masters and doctoral programs in various departments. The Program is primarily research-oriented; students pursuing degrees at the University are supported by the Program as graduate assistants and are able to focus their research on science and policy issues.
    Admissions Requirements
Students must meet the requirements of the departments that administer their degree programs.
    Student Information
From four to ten graduate research assistants are supported by the Program at any given time. These students are recruited from a wide range of disciplines, including: aerospace and mechanical engineering, anthropology, chemical engineering, civil engineering, environmental science, geography, landscape architecture, political science, public administration, and regional and city planning. Students frequently write theses and dissertations based on research that is part of a Program project.

The Master's Program in Earth Systems Science, Policy, and Management trains sophisticated public managers and policymakers, who apply innovative, systems-based thinking to environmental issues. The program challenges students to think systemically and act pragmatically. To meet this challenge, we offer a top-quality graduate program in management and policy analysis, which emphasizes practical skills and is enriched by ecological and planetary science. Our approach reflects the system-level thinking that is needed to understand ecological interactions and maintain the health of the earth's interconnected ecological, institutional, economic, and social systems.
