The Master of Science in Environmental Science degree at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs bridges the applied disciplines of chemistry, civil and chemical engineering, biology, and geology. It focuses on the world's ecosystems and prepares students with the technical skills to solve complex environmental problems that are interdisciplinary in nature, including aspects of public policy and regulations. The MSES is a two-year program with three components:
  • A core curriculum.
  • A concentration area.
  • An internship or research requirement. The areas of concentration in the MSES degree are: A bachelor's degree in a physical or life science, engineering, or a related field is required for admission. Students are required to have taken at least ONE semester (or two quarters) of calculus, chemistry with laboratory, and statistics. In addition, the best-prepared students will have taken courses in the life sciences and economics. All applicants must be computer literate. In some cases, a student may be admitted contingent upon completion of selected courses as specified by the SPEA Admissions Committee. APPLICATIONS (Catalog)

LM066 - Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science
Introduction
Maintaining both our quality of life and a clean and healthy environment is now a major concern of Government, employers, non-governmental organisations and citizens. The European Union has now a very comprehensive environmental policy, and as a Member State Ireland is obliged to act in accordance with this policy. In addition, the Irish Government has taken many initiatives to develop environmental policy, and legislation grows year by year. Consequently there is a strong demand for graduates with a scientific understanding of environmental issues, together with a full understanding of technological and management methods available to us to help solve environmental problems.
What makes Environmental Science at the University of Limerick distinctive is its relevance to industry and business, through a focus on environmental technology and management. The degree is strongly science based with approximately equal weighting given to Chemistry and Biology.

The M.S.E. degree is open to students with an ABET-accredited undergraduate engineering degree or demonstrated equivalent. The M.S.E. degree is typically a 9-month program based on coursework alone. However, M.S.E. students may optionally complete an independent research project, submitted as a formal essay. The program requires a minimum of 30 credits that includes no more than 1 credit of seminar and no more than six credits of independent research. The M.S.E. degree with significant research components will usually require three to four semesters for completion. Prerequisites for the M.S.E. program include mathematics through differential equations and computing skills. Contaminant Fate and Transport, Environmental Process Engineering, Environmental Management and Economics, and Water Resources Engineering require one course in applied mathematics, e.g. 570.495, numerical analysis, or engineering mathematics. Contaminant Fate and Transport, Environmental Process Engineering, and Water Resources Engineering require as prerequisite an introductory fluid mechanics course. The program in Contaminant Fate and Transport also requires one semester each of general and organic chemistry. If any of these prerequisites are lacking, they can be taken as part of the course of study, but the credits will not be counted toward the 30 credit requirement.

Resources Ocean Surface Temperatures Drive Recent Drought Higher than normal temperatures and lower rainfall have resulted in drought conditions in large parts of the Northern hemisphere (orange to red colors on the maps below) during the last four years. In a recent article in Science , Hoerling and Kumar link these phenomena to cold sea surface temperatures (SST's) in the eastern tropical Pacific and warm SSTs in the western tropical Pacific and Indian oceans. The warmer SSTs in the western tropical Pacific and Indian oceans are unprecedented in the 20th century, and are consistent with greenhouse gas warming.
