Environmental Science and Public Policy
Professor James J. McCarthy, Head Tutor The concentration in Environmental Science and Public Policy is designed to provide a multidisciplinary introduction to current problems of the environment. It is founded on the premise that the ability to form rational judgments concerning many of the complex challenges confronting society today involving the environment requires both an understanding of the underlying scientific and technical issues and an appreciation for the relevant economic, political, legal, historical and ethical dimensions. It offers students an opportunity to specialize in a specific area of either natural or social science relating to the environment. All students have to satisfy a core of requirements in biology, chemistry, earth and planetary sciences, economics, government and mathematics. Depending on preparation, students are encouraged to substitute more advanced courses for those required and take elective courses in their main area of interest. Enrollment in the concentration is limited not only to correspond to available resources, but also to provide opportunities for in-class discussion and for informal student-faculty interactions.

Description
Conduct research or perform investigation for the purpose of identifying, abating, or eliminating sources of pollutants or hazards that affect either the environment or the health of the population. Utilizing knowledge of various scientific disciplines may collect, synthesize, study, report, and take action based on data derived from measurements or observations of air, food, soil, water, and other sources.
Experience
Extensive skill, knowledge, and experience are needed for these occupations. Many require more than five years of experience. For example, surgeons must complete four years of college and an additional five to seven years of specialized medical training to be able to do their job.
Education A bachelor's degree is the minimum formal education required for these occupations. However, many also require graduate school. For example, they may require a master's degree, and some require a Ph.D., M.D., or J.D. (law degree).

News OLC is fast becoming a regional leader in environmental science and pre-engineering and pre-life science programs. The department is leading the college into the next century, developing state of the art technology in computers, distance learning, and science laboratories. Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Science Conservation Biology BS Earth Science BS The Lakota have always held their land base to be sacred. The land is something that must be protected and managed wisely and effectively. Consequently, OLC has developed a strong program in the area of environmental scienc. Two emphasis areas have been developed: earth sciences and conservation biology. In the earth sciences, students learn about water management, solid waste disposal, and a myriad of other issues needed to protect andimprove the quality of life on the reservation. In the area of conservation biology, wise management of wildlife and habitats is critical to the future of our reservation. The Lakota perspective is vital to the environmental science program. All students are required to take specific courses that incorporate traditional Lakota concepts about land, plants, and animals.
